DEPARTMENT OF PATHOLOGY
CORNELL UNIVERSITY MEDICAL COLLEGE
FIRST AVENUE AND 28TH STREET
Mr. H.H. Barker
NEW YORK
Copy of letter sent to
Februnry 10, 1932.
Miss Larice, Miss Fryer, Miss Shaub and
Mrs. Hus sman.
During the past year bille for medioal and
other services for the radium patients of the U. S.
Radium Corporation have increased in number and size and
have becom rather missellaneous in character. Many of
the expenses have not beon authorized by the Commission,
and some of them seem to un not proper medion) charges.
For theme ressons and beceuse of the present very depreased
state of business the on feels that they must
sorutinize expenses more carefully and urge upon our
patients the necessity of practising economy as for as
possible.
We cannot approve of routine visits at a cost
of $20.00 to $25.00 by physicians in cases in which the
condition of the patient does not vary much from month
to month. We think these medical visita should be requested
only f or some definite reason.
The services of visiting nurses, while probably
decirable and agreeable seen to us to fall, not in the clasa
of necossary medionl services, but rather in the closa of
attentions. The use of expensive tonice and
medioines, we do not feel are useful or desirable, unless
the patient is suffering from definito e enemin. X-ray
photogrsphn should bo requested only for definite ressons,
approved by the Commissione
Jor these reasons wo wish to inform you that on
and efter February 15th, 1932, no bills will be approved
by the Commission for any services which have not be en
specificelly approved for the Commission by Dr. Lloyd 3.
Craver. Dr. Craver onn be reached any norning at the
Memorial Hospital, telephone Academy 2 - 6140.
We do not wish to indiente by this note that any
worthwhile medical sttention or servico of any kind will be
withrow. On the contrary, we propose to do everything
possible for the bonefit of our patiente. We thorefore
eak your co-operation in the effort to do juatice to
nll parties concerned.
Sincerely yours,
January
James Dwing.
