Mr. H. H. Barker
United States Radium Corporation
535 Pearl Street
New York City
My dear Barker:
We have just received the depressing
news that the Macey Foundation will not be interested
in coming to our assistance in our radium research. We
quote in full the letter:
"I greatly regret to report that I have
just had an interview with Dr. McNeal of the Macy
Foundation and he states positively that the directors
of the Foundation will not give you a Grant for the
work on radium. He thinks it wise for him to give
this information as frankly as possible, so that you
may look elsewhere. He regrets the decision but re-
ports that the Macy Foundation is under the control of
Dr. Kast, who is interested mainly in migraine and
arterio sclerosis and has no interest or knowledge of
the physiology of radium. Against this stone wall I
find myself quite unable to make any entry.
"I am returning your fine monograph
with regret and hope that you may obtain aid from
some other direction."
James Suring.
Dr. Flinn writes that he will be using
the ionization chambers during the month of June.
Moreover, he states that the chambers he now uses do
not belong to the United States Radium Corporation and
yours that they have developed such a high drift that they
can be used no longer for making the expired air tests.
Consequently, we have postponed our visit to Elgin.
We have written to Dr. Leake of the
United States Public Health service and have requested
two ionization chambers and a Lind electroscope head
for temporary use. As soon as we hear from Dr. Leake
we shall go forward with our plans for our visit to Elgin.
Sincerely yours,
Herman Schluntt
hs . as
Herman Schlundt.
