February 28, 1935. Specifications which the United States Radium Corporation will put into effect to eliminate the hazards connected with radium dial painting, so far as #Radium Poisoning" is concerned. 1 - Rigid and continuous inspection of all processes involving the use of radium by a qualified officer. 2 - Painting by hand will be done by a method which will eliminate the contamination of the mouth with radium. No pointing of the brushes with the lips will be permitted. 3 - Wherever possible, styluses or pens will be used as a substitute for brushes, which will eliminate any temptation to point the brush with the lips. 4 - Cloths will be furnished for pointing brushes and for wiping styluses or pens. For wiping pens or styluses, cloths will be kept moist with a suitable solvent. 5 - Paint containers will be approximately 1/2" deep, and be so placed in a holder that retaining them in the hand is unnecessery. 6 - The mixing of dry paint with liquid ingredients will be conducted under a hood provided with suitable exhaust ventilation, to prevent the escape of dust or emanation into the workroom atmosphere. Only smell quentities of thepaint will be mixed at one time. The exact quantity will have to be gov- erned by the type of work which is being done. 7 - All utensils will be cleaned moist. The discarded material will be placed in refuse cans which will be promptly removed from the workroom. 8 - Moist cloths only will be used for removing paint from surfaces, and in recovering radio-active material from old or rejected stock. 9 - All stocks of radium material will be stored in containers shielded by lead and kept as distent as possible from the workers. 10 - The rooms in which radium painting processes are carried out will be separated from those used for other purposes. so 11 - The rooms shall be/constructed that they may be thoroughly and readily cleaned by moist methods. They will have the ususl daily cleaning and a thorough scrubbing once weekly. 12 Ample space will be allowed for each worker. 13.- Adequate illumination, free from glare, will be provided. 14 - Convenient washing facilities will be provided, with arrangements for mixing hot and cold water. Paper tovels and nail brushes will be provided. 15 - Only neat, careful persons will be allowed to do this type of work.
