HOLMES JAMES EWING, M.D. SUPERINTENDENT DIRECTOR Mr. C.B.Lee, President, U.S. Radium Corporation, 535 Péarl Street, New York, N.Y. My dear Mr. Lee: JAN 13 1939 On Saturday, January 7th, I saw Mrs. Hussmann and Mrs. Larice in their homes. Mrs. Hussman is really in a very bad way. She has a rather marked swelling at the angle of the left jaw and left facial paralysis. She states that the left side of the face was temporarily paralyzed about a year ago but that this almost entirely cleared up only to recur about four months ago. I do not recall having heard anything from Dr. Humphries about this mass which I am very much afraid may be an osteogenic sarcoma arising from one of the bones about the base of the skull at the point of exit of the left facial nerve. She also has considerable pain and disability in the left hip and there is a rather large diffuse swelling of the left hip region.which I feel may represent another sarcoma. Her general condition is poor. She has obviously lost a great deal of weight and is weak, being able to sit up in a chair for only a short time each day. It is quite evident that she needs the nursing care that has been provided for her. I discussed with her the question of entering Memorial Hospital for further study and possible treatment but she was very reluctant to do so and I really feel that we might gain very little except to satisfy our curiosity as to the exact nature of the processes in the left side of the head and in the hip. I think her outlook is poor and that we can expect that she may not survive much over six months. Mrs. Larice on the other hand is in fairly good general condition. She has a good deal of pain and tenderness in the lower back and a good deal of difficulty in walking. She will soon need a new corset. She seems to get a good deal of relief from the support of the special corset which she has made. I think it would be well soon to have further radiographs made of her pelvis and lumbar spine, possibly also of the right knee which she injured recently by a fall and which shows some swelling and tenderness. I told her that I would request that you authorize expenditure for her expenses in being
