few years ago were mortal enemies. These efforts in cooperation will have benefits far beyond
the space station program, and, I believe, are among the most important events and
accomplishments of the 20th century and provide a promising beginning for the 21st century.
There are significant challenges ahead in the 21st century, and poor decisions made now, at the
beginning of it, could result in the next century resembling the apocalyptic visions. Wise
decisions, on the other hand, could result in the next century being when, as Buckminster Fuller
said, "For the first time, man has the chance to be a complete success in his environment." One
of the greatest challenges of the 21st century will be learning to live in harmony with other
people and cultures as well as with the natural environment. The increased communications and
transportation capabilities, as well as the increased population, of the 20th century have
shortened the distances between all of us. It behooves us to be more patient, more tolerant, and
more understanding of others. Hopefully, wise decisions in general, and such cooperative
ventures as the International Space Station in particular, will help us to reach this condition.
Social change will continue, political change will continue, technological change will continue.
I will make one prediction with absolute certainty: in the next 100 years the world will change.
And while we live and breathe, we have opportunities to affect how the world changes. By our
actions and decisions we help to shape the future. Here, on the verge of the 21st century, we
have the opportunity, and perhaps the obligation to future generations, to make our decisions
especially carefully and wisely, so that the promise of the future can be realized.
The end of the world is coming, but only the end of the world as we know it.
Speaker introduction: Paul Wieland is an engineer with NASA working on the life support
system for the International Space Station, which is currently being assembled in orbit around
the Earth. Being part of an organization that has a significant effect on the future, from time to
time he contemplates what the future may be like. This evening he will tell us some of his
thoughts. His speech is titled "The End of the World."
