RE: INFORMATION REQUEST
PHONE: 224-1251
FAX: 224-1259
It would be great if we could get the papers by Wednesday a.m.
Thanks much.
I was hoping to get some help with information as we prepare for
the floor. Specifically, I would like to get bullet points;
sourced facts; statistics; report cites and/or quotes to address
the following issues:
FDA
1. Price elasticity of cigarettes with respect to kids. How do
we know that kids will reduce consumption with increases in
price?
2. Health care costs and economic cost of tobacco use. Grand
totals and how much out of Medicare. Also, is there a way to
break down the $50 billion in health care costs to a per family
amount that makes our point more effectively.
3. Smoking related disease statistics: numbers of cancer;
emphysema; heart disease, etc.
4. Summary of FDA rule broken out in issue areas: Advertising;
Point of Sale; youth access etc.
5. Why licensing is important and how it compares to alcohol
rules.
JUSTICE DEPARTMENT
1. Estimated legal cost and court cost of litigating state suits
one by one.
OMB
1. Bankruptcy is not a realistic scenario under S. 1415
EPA
1. Health impact of second hand smoke
2. Number of states/communities with smoking restrictions.
TREASURY
1. Why smuggling is not a compelling issue under S. 1415.
