Mike,
There are so many articles 1 could share with you. But, the most important was written
a few years ago by a teacher who was touched by our students. Please take the time
to read this letter. It was written to all Pride students. At least you will know why I care
so much that this next generation of students have the opportunity for appreciation and
recognition.
If it helps our credibility, our group has performed and/or presented at the White House
Conferences for a Drug Free America, and the Fifth Annual Drig Free Schools and
Community Conference, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Education. While
extremely talented, our students are more talented in presenting workshops for other
students on topics of interest to the health of our nation: drug abuse, teen pregnancy,
and violence.
Our final count of students will be complete tomorrow. However it will be either 59 or
60 total individuals.
Thanks again. You are appreciated by at least 60 people and most particularly by me!
Sincerely,

America's Pride is also a very accomplished performance

for more than 500,000 people. Their message is to celebrate
life drug-free while reinforcing American values of pride,
honesty, wisdom, and caring for others. In each Pride
performance, eyes moisten as the Pride kids sing of their love
for our country and the freedom from alcohol and other drugs.
I am writing you this letter to ask for your help. We would
like to honor and support the newly-elected President and
Vice-President by offering a musical tune or two during the
inaugural festivities. Of course, we would welcome an
invitation to another White House sponsored function.
Your personal support for these hard-working Toledo-area
students will make for a life-time memory. I also believe it
will strengthen the Clinton-Gore theme of change in America.
For surely, change will begin with our nation's young people.
Thank you for your interest and help.

MEMORANDUM FOR MARCIA HALE, OFFICE OF SCHEDULING
FROM:
Mike Schmidt, Domestic Policy Council
SUBJECT:
Scheduling Request from Toledo Youth Ambassadors
I just wanted to bring the attached request to your attention (your office should
have already received a copy). Larry Cardwell and I met at the President's
breakfast for state governors and mayors on April 14, a part of the "Summer
Challenge" event sponsored by The Department of Labor and The Department of
Education. Mr. Cardwell is the Director of the Toledo Youth Commission, and he
and Toledo Mayor John McHugh are strong supporters of the President's Summer
Jobs proposal.
Mr. Cardwell would like to set up a brief meeting between the President and a
group called the Toledo Youth Ambassadors sometime in August of this year. His
request caught my attention because these Youth Ambassadors are a group of
disadvantaged young people who are trying to make a difference in their urban
communities. Not only would a meeting with the President be a tremendous
opportunity for these young people, but as a side benefit I think it would be a
great opportunity for the President to tout the success of his summer jobs package
as well (assuming that there will be one).
Give me a call at X2165 if I can give you any additional information or if you have
any questions about this request.

Dear Ms. Hale:
At the suggestion of Mr. Mike Schmidt, I am writing to ask for your assistance
in making a dream come true for 180 young people. These young people, who are
part of the Toledo Youth Ambassadors, are dreaming of visiting our nation's
capitol and President Bill Clinton. We are hoping that a date in the first three
weeks of August 1993 would be convenient for the White House and the President.
Please let me know which date(s) would be best suited to your schedule needs.
Perhaps it also would be helpful for you to know something about our
"Ambassadors." The Toledo Youth Ambassadors are young people committed to the
shared values of family, school, community, and country. Youth ambassadors are
committed to the democratic principles upon which our nation is formed. Each
ambassador has pledged to lead an alcohol and drug free life, obey all laws, and
serve as a healthy role model for others. Youth ambassadors believe in the
strength of cultural diversity and establishment of strong and vital families and
neighborhoods.
Some of our ambassadors are selected in part because of their participation in
the President's Summer Challenge. Other students are members of Toledo's
America's Pride Drug Prevention Training Team. Combined with a diversity of
other young role models, our ambassadors are hoping for a once in a lifetime
educational opportunity. Your efforts on our behalf will help keep them focused
for the challenges they face and opportunities they meet.

Dear Mrs. Clinton,
At the suggestion of Mr. Mike Schmidt, Domestic Policy, we are writing to ask for your
assistance in making a dream come true for 85 young people. These young people
are actively involved in shaping Toledo's future through drug and violence prevention.
Our "ambassadors" represent the city-wide Youth Commission and Toledo's nationally
recognized America's Pride drug prevention team. For more than a year, these
students have dreamed of an opportunity to visit our nation's capitol and meet with the
First Lady and the President.
Perhaps it also would be helpful for you to know something about our young people
and their mission. America's Pride of Toledo has presented workshops and
performances for more than 500,000 people over the last eight years. Included
among their performances were numerous presentations for former Governor Celeste,
presentations for the White House Conference on Drug Free America. the Department
of Education, and the California Bowl. In addition, our ambassadors now include
students who represent all of Toledo on the Toledo Youth Commission. These
students are selected in part because of their participation in the President's Summer
Youth Challenge and because they represent the best qualities in young people.
They work actively with other youth to represent youth interests in city government
planning.
Our greatest wish now is to visit with you. The opportunity to meet you briefly will
provide additional fire and focus to the hardest working youth we know. Our visit will
inspire others to get involved as the challenges facing our nation increase. Please
help us to make this dream come true. Of course we would be willing to visit during
any convenient time during the balance of this school year. Thank you in advance for
your consideration.

Dear Ms. Solis,
Thank you for staying interested in a wonderful group of young folks from Toledo. For
a long time, these students have hoped for the opportunity to meet with the President
or First Lady. Perhaps their dream is closer to becoming a reality.
I understand that you asked Mr. Larry Cardwell to respond to you with specific dates
our group of teens might be able to travel to Washington to meet briefly with Mrs.
Clinton. During the period from March 2 through March 5, the majority of our
representatives will be in Philadelphia. If it were possible to visit for a few minutes
March 5, March 2, or March 3 (in order of preference), it would save our students
considerable travel time and expense. If these dates are not good, then our spring
vacation dates anytime during the week of April 4 would also work out for us.
We have written a song, called "Hope", for the First Lady and President, in honor of all
they do to uplift our nation and maintain a spirit of hope. It is our great wish to be able
to express this song and a precious few minutes at a time of your convenience. Such
a visit as indicated earlier will inspire this generation for a lifetime.
For your reference, I have included a copy of the previous letter sent by Mr. Cardwell.

Thank you for bringing members of America's PRIDE to Columbus for
the Ohio Department of Health's teenage pregnancy prevention
campaign kickoff. They are terrific!
As you know, the teen-to-teen outreach is one of the most
important aspects of this campaign. America's PRIDE sets a great
example for younger teens to become involved in their communities
and to avoid The Teen Parent TRAP. I'm proud America's PRIDE
will be representing the state of Ohio in our schools, and I look
forward to the group's continued participation as the campaign
unfolds.
You're doing a tremendous job with these young people. Keep up
the good work!

Dear Mr. Schmidt,
Perhaps there is something about the tenacity of Midwesterners, or at least Michigan
grads! Our philosophy is no doubt similar. We place young people at the top of our
priorities and first in our hearts. After we made promises to our students to visit the
White House last summer, I wanted to do everything possible to honor our
commitment. Your help in trying to work out our trip is appreciated. Regardless of the
outcome, I would like to share my sincere thanks for your support and advocacy. You
should know that you have some great friends in Toledo, Ohio.
I have included some of the information you requested along with past communication
with various scheduling offices. As well, I have tried to piece together a chronology of
events and promises made to our area young people. Incidentally, Larry Cardwell
confirms that the President did say a visit could be arranged.
I hope this information is useful. As you can see, it is easy to give up when several
promises were made and broken. Nonetheless, we are keeping the faith. Perhaps a
little luck and a friend can help make something happen.
Best Wishes,

Mike,
Here is a list of some of our "disappointments". I hope this is helpful to you.
April 14, 1993: Mr. Larry Cardwell, Director of the Youth Commission attends a
conference convened by the Department of Labor and the Department of Education to
promote Summer Challenge 1993. At this meeting. Mr. Cardwell went up to the
President and asked him if it would be possible to bring our area youth to meet him at
the White House. The President replied, "We can do that". As a result of various
subsequent communication, our students and local officials were told of an impending
summer trip to Washington D.C.
October, 1992: Mrs. Gore visited Toledo (Ottawa Hills) Ohio for a fund-raising event. I
spoke with Mrs. Gore at this event about bringing America's Pride to Washington. She
said she could think of no reason why this couldn't happen. I shared support letters
and information about America's Pride with her travelling staff. Then, after the
Inaugural event, we received a cordial reply indicating that her staff gave her the
information too late for the Inaugural. (see reply letter enclosed)
A follow up letter was sent to Mrs. Gore in February, 1993. We have never received a
reply.
Early Fall, 1992: Candidate Bill Clinton's campaign schedules a rally in Toledo.
America's Pride is scheduled to perform. Late the evening prior to the event,
America's Pride is cancelled when the rally becomes a major address on employment.

Dear Mrs. Clinton,
At the suggestion of Mr. Mike Schmldt, Domestic Policy, we are writing to ask for your
assistance in making a dream come true for 65 young people.
Included
among their performances were numerous presentations for former Governor Celeste,
presentations for the White House Conference on Drug Free America, the Department
of Education. and the California Bowl. in addition, our ambassadors now include
students who represent all of Toledo on the Toledo Youth Commission. These
students are selected in part because of their participation in the President's Summer
Sincerely,
Ken Newbury. Ph.D.

Dear Ms. Hale:
At the suggestion of Mr. Mike Schmidt, 1 am writing to ask for your assistance
in making a dream come true for 180 young people.
Some of our ambassadors are selected in part because of their participation in
the President's Summer Youth Challenge.
Sincerely,
Larry Cardwell
