The Arts Education Partnership, a national non-profit organization supported by the U.S.
Department of Education, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Council of Chief State
School Officers and the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies, has released a report entitled
"Young Children and the Arts: Making Creative Connections."
This report illustrates the important role that the arts play in in helping young children learn and
develop. It provides guiding principles and recommendations to organizations to support the
development of arts-based early childhood programs and resources. It is the only report currently
available that provides a set of principles and actions that child care providers and educators can
take to improve or develop programs for young children in the arts.
The report is the result of a series of meetings conducted by members of the Partnership's Task
Force on Children's Learning and the Arts: Birth to Age Eight including representatives from the
National Association for the Education of Young Children, National Association of Elementary
School Principals, the Wolf Trap Institute for Early Learning in the Arts, the National
Endowment for the Arts, Head Start/Health and Human Services, and the U.S. Department of
Education.
The report is available from the Council of Chief State School Officers, and it is also available
for printing from the Arts Education Partnership web site at
http://aep-arts.org/tfadvoc/taskforces/ecreport.html
A companion database of arts-based early childhood programs, resources and research has been
developed that is currently available from the web site for the Wolf Trap Institute for Early
Learning in the Arts, http://www.wolf-trap.org
