The University of Kansas Medical Center School of Medicine Office of the Executive Dean November 18, 1998 Mrs. Hillary Clinton The White House Washington DC Dear Mrs. Clinton: I am writing you at the request of the student co-presidents of SEAD (Students Educating and Advocating for Diversity) at the University of Kansas Medical Center. I would like to endorse, with great enthusiasm, their request that you consider addressing the University of Kansas Medical Center community at a session sponsored by SEAD. SEAD represents one of the finest student organizations that I have known in more than 25 years of experience with medical education. This dedicated group of young people is truly focused to creating a climate that welcomes diversity at KU Medical Center and also is fully committed to ensuring that future health professionals are educated appropriately to provide care to people with understanding and compassion and without regard for socioeconomic status, gender, ethnicity or sexual orientation. Knowing of your long standing interest in the provision of health care and your understanding of major issues facing the health care professions in the next century, I believe that you could present a powerful message for our student body who represent the health care providers of the future. In addition, the issues which you have so eloquently espoused relating to women, underserved populations, and children are ones which are of particular interest to SEAD and to many of the students and faculty of this institution. We would indeed be honored should you be willing to address the students, faculty and staff of the Medical Center. I am once more humbled as well as amazed by the commitment and dedication of our students and can only say that on behalf of School of Medicine we are entirely supportive of their efforts. Sincerely yours, Deborah E. Powell, M.D. Executive Dean and Vice Chancellor for Clinical Affairs DEP:alk 3901 Rainbow Blvd., Kansas City, Kansas 66160-7300 (913) 588-5200 Fax (913) 588-5259
