West Company
INTRODUCTION
W
est Company (West) began operations in 1988 and serves all of Mendocino County, a rural
county located on the northwestern coastal section of California. West has its headquarters
in Ukiah, an inland city, and a branch office in Fort Bragg, which serves clients on the coast.
Although the program was initiated to serve women, credit and training are now provided to both
women and men.
Mendocino County is located in northern California, bordered by Sonoma, Lake, and
Glenn counties to the south, Trinity and
Humboldt counties to the north, and the
Pacific Ocean to the west.
The northern coastal region of
California has been significantly depen-
dent upon the timber industry for most of
its history. Until the 1920s, this region's
coastal redwood forests served a local
San Francisco
(California) market; from the middle of
the 1920s, a national real estate boom
created a far larger market for California
timber. According to Belzer and Kroll
N
(1986), the state's lumber production
peaked in 1955 with more than six billion

Demand for lumber is generally tied to new housing starts. Belzer notes this trend and
points to the prolonged stagnation in housing in the 1970s as a key factor in understanding the
downward trend in demand for California lumber.
