PURPOSE
You will conclude a day of briefings by top women in the Administration, Mrs. Gore and
the Vice President for 32 editors and writers for women, children and family magazines.
Following your briefing, you will host a reception for the magazine representatives and
Administration women. The suggested topics for your focus are early childhood, child
care and children's health. The day is designed to: (1) amplify the Administration's great
accomplishments for women and families; and (2) showcase the star line-up of women
serving in the Administration. The circulation of the magazines represented in the room
will be more than 52 million.
II.
BACKGROUND
The day for the magazine representatives will begin at 9 a.m. and most of the briefings will
be either in the Indian Treaty Room or in Room 472. Each briefer will take Q's & A's,
except the Vice President. The Vice President will be announcing in Room 450 that the
U.S. Postal Service will be distributing more than 200 million postage stamp booklets with
the National Domestic Violence Hotline number (1-800-799-SAFE) printed on the covers.
Mrs. Gore will brief on sudden infant death syndrome.
Other briefers for the day will be:
Maria Echaveste, on the President's Apparel Industry Partnership; Madeleine Albright, an
update on follow-up to the U.N. Fourth World Conference on Women; Donna Shalala, the
Administration's initiatives to fight breast cancer and Girl Power; Carol Browner,
environmental health threats to children and families; Janet Reno, the President's youth
violence initiative; Alexis Herman, the Administration's initiatives to balance work and
family. Judith Winston, Title IX; Carol Rasco, America Reads; Aida Alvarez, creating
opportunities for women in business and SBA's role in Welfare to Work.
