Dear Ms. Clinton:
I enclose a manuscript of my book, Becoming Good American Schools: The
Struggle for Civic Virtue in Education Reform (Jossey Bass, Fall 1999). The
book is about one of the largest national school reform efforts to be conducted,
and quite a lot more. I believe that much of your work anticipates the course
of this reform. Which is to say, the reform both failed miserably and
produced glimpses, for those who would look, of a hopeful struggle. The
challenge of writing the book was to reveal the rich power of that hope and
struggle (what we are calling "betterment") in the midst of a rational, largely
technical, and often cynical culture of reform (what we call the "reform
mill").
I would love to know what you think of the manuscript. And further, if you
find the book enough to your liking, I would ask you to write just a few words
to alert potential readers who are familiar with your work that this book also
finds the good of America's future in hope and struggle. In other words,
gulp, a blurb.
