The teen years should be the best years of your life. Unfortunately for more and more
young people they are becoming the worst years of their lives. They are the years that
serve as a basic platform that will shape you as an adult. For those of you here today that
are teenagers, I'm going to let you in on a secret. While you may think some adults look
down on you, the truth is that almost all of us still see ourselves in teen images. We are
always surprised to see this older person staring back at us in the mirror. Our teen years
are critical to our self-image and self-confidence.
I have had the privilege of working directly with teens and supporting those that do for 34
years. They have honored me with their trust. They have shared with me their most
intimate concerns, their aspirations, and their life challenges. As they struggle to gain the
experience and wisdom to mature they need our support.
What I have learned is that & critical need is for an adult to care and to take the time to
listen to thom. The adult that counts most in their lives is their parents. I still have a
vivid memory of Tom. We were at a YMCA Mountain Camp and he asked if he could
talk to me. While we looked out over a beautiful lake, he confided in me that he was
considering suicide. When I asked why, he said that he could not live up to his fathers'
expectations of being a medical doctor and could not live with the shame of disappointing
his father. To make a long story short, he agreed to my meeting with them both.
Because of poor communication and different assumptions, Tom learned that his father
only wanted him to have the confidence to reach for the stars - not necessarily to be a
doctor like himself. Tom became a concert violinist and until his fathers' death, he could
not have been more proud of his son.
It doesn't surprise me that our YMCA Survey a document between parents and teens
perception of their communication. In almost every case, parents have a higher
perception that they are effectively sharing their values and beliefs than do their teenage
sons and daughters.

What we have found in our youth and teen programs in Dallas is that today's parents
have less time than their parents did when they were growing up. Communication has
always been difficult, but now that the majority of parents have a full-time job and live a
fast-paced life, they have less time for their teens. After work they must do their normal
day-to-day routine of shopping, cleaning and other errands. Family mealtime is quickly
disappearing and the time parents do have to spend with their teens is dominated by
logistics; Did you do your homework? Have you cleaned your room? What is your
schedule for sports this week? When is band practice? Little time remains for quality
conversation to share concerns.

The Dallas YMCA has initiated a partnership with a grocery.com, a cleaners, and a
pharmacy to allow parents to pick up their groceries, cleaning and pharmacy items at the
YMCA while picking up their children at the same time. There is DO extra charge for this
service. Our only requirement is that they must go home, turn off the television and have
dinner together as a family. We don't know how long dinner will last, but it's at least a

Today, we will learn that our teens must be a priority. What is more important than our
children? How can parents learn to communicate their values and make the time to be a
greater part of their teen's lives. How can toons express their feelings in a way that their
parents understand? That is what today is all about. There is a quote by H. Jackson
Brown Jr. "Live so that when your children think of fairness and integrity, they think of
you."
