United Way President Stepping Down
WASHINGTON (AP) Elaine L. Chao, who took over leadership of
the United Way of America after a financial scandal, says her work
is done and she will leave the charitable organization by Sept. 1.
The original purposes for which I was brought into United Way
of America to clean up the past and reposition United Way of
America for the future have been fulfilled, she said. My job
is complete.
Ms. Chao was named president and chief executive officer in
August 1992 following a scandal surrounding former president
William Aramony, who along with two aides was convicted of
defrauding the umbrella group for 2,000 local United Ways out of
about $600,000.
Aramony is serving a seven-year prison term for conspiracy, tax
and fraud but is appealing the conviction.
Ms. Chao, a former director of the Peace Corps, said Friday she
plans to lecture, join a Washington think tank, volunteer for Bob
Dole's Republican presidential campaign and work for the
re-election of her husband, Sen. Mitch McConnell, R-Ky.
Publicity about the scandal led to a dropoff in contributions to
local United Ways.
Paula Harper Bethea, chairwoman of the United Way of America
board of governors, credited Ms. Chao with instituting new
financial and management controls and increasing membership and
fund-raising levels.
Elaine Chao has been vital to transforming United Way of
America. Her dedicated efforts, coupled with her leadership and her
compassion, have enabled United Way of America to regain the
public's trust and confidence, Bethea said in a statement.

alive, not because of any allegorical techniques, but because
Capek, like all writers of genius, creates a completely convinc-
ing atmosphere. We believe in the newts as they strengthen
and multiply and as they prepare themselves for their revolt,
all the while supported by their ultimate victims. But WAR
WITH THE NEWTS is no mere warning; it also points the
way into the future and it sees a way out, just as all truly
great books do. It is only up to the reader to find the solution.
Although this book was written in the face of stark horror,
it is full of humor. Sometimes this humor, like Swift's, is
biting and provocative, at others it has a melancholy, Chap-

linesque quality, but it always displays a boundless love for
the human being and his lonely soul.
Capek was born on January 9, 1890, in a small hillside town
of northeast Bohemia. He went to secondary school there but
received most of his university training abroad. He studied
philosophy first in Prague, later in Berlin and finally in Paris.
In 1915, he received a doctoral degree in Prague with a disserta
tion on pragmatism. In 1917 he became a member of the
editorial staff of a large Czech daily newspaper, and from that
time to the end of his life journalism always complemented
his creative literary work.
His first books were written in collaboration with his
brother Joseph. The best known product of this collaboration
was a verse play, THE INSECTS, written in 1920 and subse
quently performed with great success in theaters throughout

Now I can send sage (or at least seasoned) advice, since I
turned "50" on Monday. The baby boomer wave is now assaulting the
half-century mark; this is scary.
Bill, your day isn't that far behind. Other than being told
I now qualify for AARP membership ("No, thanks") and taking an
inordinate amount of ribbing, turning 50 has not been too
traumatic. My secretary, Gwenn, ordered a huge wall-size telegram
which purported to be birthday greetings from "Bill and Hillary" on
my half-century anniversary. The store which sold the sign told
her, 'okay, but this is a stale idea, everyone does that.'
Hillary, only an unavoidable work commitment kept me from
seeing you in Chicago Monday. I recently worked so hard trying a
huge ($70 million claim) for a month in a federal court jury trial.
The jury entered a mixed verdict. The dollar amounts were skewed
and goofy, resulting in a $24.5 million verdict against my client
(the governmental commuter railroad authority) and a $780,000
verdict in our favor. We are in the midst of post-trial motion
practice to try to turn the outcome around. Monday I was required
to report to the board of directors of our client about this
terrible jury result. So that is how I spent my 50th birthday on
Monday instead and why I was so disappointed not to see you.
Nothing less could have kept me away.
I spent 45 minutes yesterday talking to a Los Angeles Times
reporter who was given, apparently by Linda, a list of persons to
talk to about the "real" Hillary. Hopefully, the story will be
decidedly more accurate, and therefore favorable, than the norm.
Bill, the Illinois primary is in a week and prospects look
very encouraging. I sent an E-mail within my office mentioning
that I was on the ballot as a Clinton/Gore delegate and also making
available forms for people to volunteer for the campaign. Though
E-mail fosters more informality in communication, I was still
surprised (and pleased) to receive this message from a secretary
whom I don't know well: 'Go. I am glad to know that someone is
there.' You are there for many people who don't necessarily speak
out, but they rely on your steady hand.
I am going to visit my 82-year old Mother this weekend for St.
Patrick's Day in St. Joseph. She keeps a good pulse on how people
feel (she was complaining about all the people who lost their jobs
in St. Joe when businesses down-sized, long before the New York
Times took up the issue) and I'll let you know what she says. My
brother, Pat, is going through the Missouri caucus system currently
in hopes of being a Clinton delegate again this year.
I was struck by Chelsea having turned 16 and not just because
that is the long-awaited (by her no doubt) age to drive. I remember
writing you when she was born. Children grow up so fast and I
really dreaded the fact that Michael (24) and Cara (22) were going
to be adults and drift away. In reality, having adult children is
a wonderful experience; they are so interesting, really, and you
see things anew from their perspective. At least Mary, the high
school freshman, fosters a younger view; last night we went to the
high school basketball game (played before 8100 people in McGaw
Hall in Northwestern) where New Trier earned the right to go
downstate (actually Peoria) as one of the 8 finalists in the state
boys basketball tournament. New Trier had the benefit of a 70-foot
(I'm not kidding) buzzer beater at the end of the 3d quarter which
electrified the crowd.
Please excuse this meandering letter; attribute it to the
eccentricities of the "elderly". Really this letter is intended to
have only one message -- keep up the good work and know that you
have millions of friends out there (of which I proudly count myself
one) who are counting on you doing just that.

I can't appear here today with a word in support of our
First Lady. 1 am sure you have noticed that the same
members of Congress who want to wipe out Medicare and
cut back Social Security and kill Heardstart and Public
Broadcadsting are the ones trying to run off our First
dady.
I don't know why a Little Rock law firms billing forms
showed up on the third floor of the White House but I do
know it is heing used to divert the country from public
needs and it is hardly relevant. These are the same people
who three years ago wanted to send Hillary Rodham Clinton
back to making cookies. If you are up to your elbows in
cookie dough, you can't work on health care, or keep guns
out of schoolrooms, or try to keep us focused on the
salvation of children from hunger, abusc, homclessness.
The critics are ignorant of the history of First Ladies.
Very few First Ladics were sidcline sitters. From the first,
Martha Washington was at Valley Forge and worked to get
pensions for the frozen troops. And George demanded that
she get onc too and she did. Abigail Adams did her
damndest to include equal rights for women in our
Constitution. Betty Ford and Rosalyn Carter were hard at it
again lobbying for ERA with Governors and Senators. Julia
Tyler (Mrs. John Tyler) lobbied Co ngress for Texas to
become a state. In today's atmosphere, the media would be
demanding that she register as a lobbyist.
One of the great advantages of age is that you and I--
we seniors --can say what we fink because we are not

H.E.L.P. GOES NATIONAL
H.E.L.P. has undertaken a major effort to take our continuum of care model across the
nation. In addition to H.E.L.P. I, H.E.L.P. Bronx Crotona and Morris, H.E.L.P.
Suffolk., WestH.E.L.P. Greenburgh and Mt. Vernon, Genesis Homes. Genesis Apart-
ments at Union Square, H.E.L.P. Haven, and the H.E.L.P. Prenatal Center, H.E.L.P.
has begun to develop in Memphis, Houston, and Philadelphia. Each of these new ven-
tures is intended to manifest H.E.L.P.'s mission of empowering families and individ-
uals to lead independent, productive lives by helping individuals help themselves.

ncluded in this effort is H.E.L.P.'s first initiative to serve homeless individuals with a
transitional facility located in Memphis. Located on the campus of the former Baptist
Hospital, this facility will deliver a social service program concentrating on the problems
of substance abuse and vocational training. In the Third Ward area of Houston, the
Martin Luther King, Jr. - H.E.L.P. Center will provide transitional housing to 60 home-
less families. H.E.L.P. Philadelphia is a unique 90 unit project serving two populations
- homeless families and low-income working families--in the same development. This
complex will be the first to capitalize on H.E.L.P.'s successful transitional and permanent
residence models.
Over the last decade, H.E.L.P. has become a national leader in community redevelopment, providing its
outstanding delivery of human services to a growing population of homeless families, children, and indi-
viduals. Each year we have seen this group grow as economic, cultural, social, and political attitudes and
policies work against families and individuals. After 10 years of working with thousands of families to
attain self-sufficiency, H.E.L.P. has learned that wise investments in prevention and education can lead
individuals out of the cycle of poverty and into independent, healthy lives. H.E.L.P. remains committed
to finding solutions that create opportunities for families to succeed and even flourish.

Matilda Raffa Cuomo, Founder and Chairperson of MENTORING USA and
First Lady of New York State from 1983 to 1994, is an activist and one of the
nation's leading voices for the causes of children and families.
In 1987, Mrs. Cuomo founded the innovative New York State Mentoring
Program (NYSMP), a unique statewide, elementary school-based intervention
program that links adult volunteers on a one-to-one basis with children at risk of
dropping out of school. Building on this effective mentoring model, Mrs. Cuomo
established MENTORING USA (MUSA) in 1995 to replace the NYSMP. The MUSA
model has expanded to many states and is now included in the continuum of care
services provided by H.E.L.P. (Housing Enterprise for the Less Privileged), the
nation's largest provider of transitional housing and comprehensive independent
living programs for homeless families.
For over thirty years, Mrs. Cuomo has been deeply involved with the fight
to prevent breast cancer and has expanded her involvement to become a national
spokesperson and inspiration in the crusade against breast cancer. She began as a
volunteer of the American Cancer Society in Queens and now serves as a Lifetime
Board Member of the National American Cancer Society and as a Board Member of
the President's Council of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York City.
Matilda Cuomo has been widely recognized for her involvement as an
outstanding volunteer for the health and well-being of children and families. Most
recently, she received the first Lion of Judah Award presented by the United
Jewish Appeal Federation of New York Women's Campaign and the 1995
Rainbow Awards by the Adam Walsh Children's Fund, a division of the National
Center for Missing and Exploited Children. She was the first American to receive
the International Telamone Prize for Peace in Agrigento, Italy (1995). She is also
the recipient of the Queens Division "Gold Medal Award" presented by the
National American Cancer Society, The National Italian American Foundation's
1993 Humanitarian Award, and a special Exemplary Mother award from American
Mothers, Inc.
Mrs. Cuomo's recent activities include keynoting the 1995 Child Welfare
League of America Mid-Atlantic Region Conference in Philadelphia, the Kentucky
Women's Health Conference, the Summit of Italian American Organization
Executives in Washington, D.C., and the National Center for Montessori Education
Conference in Newport Beach, California.
As First Lady, Mrs. Cuomo chaired and served as chief spokesperson for the
New York State Decade of the Child initiative, an effort begun in 1988 to improve
the quality of, and access to, over 140 state programs for children and their
families. Mrs. Cuomo chaired the New York State Citizens Task Force on the
Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect. She initiated the Decade of the Child
Information Line which uses a computerized database to provide families with
customized listings of community programs and services.
In conjunction with the New York State Departments of Health and
Education and Cornell University, Mrs. Cuomo initiated a nutrition education
curricula for grades K-12, called "Nutrition for Life," which is available free to all
public and private New York State schools.
A New York State parenting program, the Pre- and Post-Natal Parenting
Education Hospital Program (PPPEHP), that is now replicated in many states across
the country, was established under her leadership. PPPEHP operates in all 174
hospitals in the state providing maternity services. PPPEHP provides new parents
with information and support during the pre- and post-natal period.
Mrs. Cuomo created the "New York Family Album," a widely praised and
emulated adoption recruitment tool. To help children in foster care find
permanent, loving homes, she launched the visioning process and spearheaded
eight state-wide forums that led to the development of Families For Kids, A.S.A.P.,
a trailblazing restructuring of the entire child welfare system in New York State.
Together with the Director of Economic Development, Mrs. Cuomo co-
chaired New York State's International Partnership Program (IPP) and traveled
around the world to promote international cooperation and understanding.
Mrs. Cuomo led New York State's participation in the United Nations 1990
World Summit for Children and the ratification of the UN Convention on the Rights
of the Child. At the invitation of UNICEF, she attended the inauguration of
President Nelson Mandela and in 1988 traveled to Zimbabwe and Mozambique to
speak at an international symposium to promote child survival and development. In
1994, she was invited to the Republic of Malta by the U.N. International Steering
Committee to address a conference launching the International Year of the Family.
Matilda Cuomo graduated cum laude from St. John's University and pursued
a career as an elementary school teacher. While attending St. John's Teachers
College as a Spanish major, she met Mario Matthew Cuomo, and they were
married in 1954. They are the parents of five children and six grandchildren.

H.E.L.P. (Housing Enterprise for the Less Privileged) was founded by Andrew Cuomo in 1986, with the
conviction that homeless families need more than a roof and a key to address the symptoms associated with
homelessness. Through a public-private sector partnership, H.E.L.P. developed a transitional housing
model that provides a safe and supportive living environment with on-site services tailored to meet the
needs of homeless families. Caring for over 750 families a night, H.E.L.P. is now the largest private
provider of transitional housing with on-site services for homeless families in the nation.
At the core of H.E.L.P.'s transitional housing model is a recognition that the families have a range of needs
beyond shelter. The message we impart is "we respect you", in return we ask the residents to respect our
staff and property. Consequently, the program provides services that prepare a family to live independently
and are oriented towards building self-esteem. Among the services available at the H.E.L.P. facilities are
counseling, day care, medical care, parenting skills and independent living skills courses, computer
workshops, vocational training, education programs and re-housing assistance.
THE GENESIS PROJECT
The Genesis Project is a recently formed not-for-profit organization created by Andrew Cuomo and others
from the H.E.L.P. organization. Principles such as prevention before intervention; independence versus
dependence; work not welfare; integration; tenant participation; and privatization underscore the Genesis
philosophy.
The Project's first initiative, Genesis Homes, opened in 1992 in East New York Brooklyn. It provides
housing for 150 families, as well as a wide range of services oriented towards the needs of the tenants as
well as members of the broader community. Tenant participation and community outreach are
cornerstones of the program, providing a beacon of hope in a blighted community. The Project's latest
development, Genesis Apartments at Union Square, located in midtown Manhattan, provides 94 units of
housing, as well as programs, and services, to the residents and community.
The tenant population of Genesis is comprised of two groups: formerly homeless families and working
families earning under $27,000 per year, 60% of area median income. A positive synergy is created with
the integration of these two groups.
Genesis offers a wide range of on-site programs and activities, including computer skills training,
educational preparation and employment training classes, life skills classes, organized recreational
activities, after-school programs, art and dance classes, cultural awareness classes, and a summer day
camp Day care is also outside providers to operate programs such as Studio-in-a-School (an art program),
Kids Club (after school program), and athletic programs through the Police Athletic League. All of these
programs are accessible to (and developed with input from) both residents and the broader community.

MENTORING USA
MENTORING USA was established in 1995 as a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization to
prevent children from dropping out of school, to build their self-esteem and to acquire the
skills to compete in the workforce of the 21st century.
MENTORING USA has been adapted from the successful New York State Mentoring
Program (NYSMP) which Mrs. Cuomo started on 1987. As of December 1994, there
were 250 school based programs statewide with about 6,400 mentors and mentees
participating in these programs.
MENTORING USA is a unique school or site-based early intervention program that
matches caring, responsible adult volunteers on a one-to-one basis with children in grades
K-8. The trained mentor helps the child to broaden his or her vision of opportunities and
to achieve academic and personal goals. The mentor and mentee meet a minimum of four
hours each month.
In addition to continuing the programs under the NYSMP, MENTORING USA has
launched two programs in H.E.L.P.'s Genesis residences for formerly homeless and low
income families in Manhattan and Brooklyn. The program at each facility is supervised by
a trained coordinator who is familiar with the child's specific needs.
Plans are underway to expand MENTORING USA to New York City Housing Authority
sites and other communities throughout the United States.

MENTORING
1995 - 1996 OBJECTIVES FOR
MENTORING USA
MENTORING USA (MUSA) will continue its outreach to all of the former New York State
Mentoring Programs throughout New York State. MUSA will provide resources, technical
assistance, materials and training workshops to enable these programs to continue.
MENTORING USA will continue to expand programs at Genesis sites of the H.E.L.P.
organization. Presently MUSA is operating two mentoring programs at Genesis Apartments
(Manhattan) and Genesis Homes (Brooklyn). It is expected that within the next six to ten
months MUSA will implement mentoring programs in at least two additional H.E.L.P. Tier II
sites.
MENTORING USA has provided technical assistance to the Walden Group in San Diego to
enable them to plan the implementation of MENTORING USA programs in Los Angeles
County.
MENTORING USA is working with Dr. Beverly Hall, State Superintendent of Schools for
Newark New Jersey to begin programs in that city. Planning is underway.
MENTORING USA upon the suggestion of Mayor Rudolph Giuliani is working with the
New York City Housing Authority to begin programs in two sites in Manhattan. Mentor
sources for these programs will be member hospitals of the Greater New York Hospital
Association.
Matilda Raffa Cuomo has been appointed chair of the National Italian American Foundation
(NIAF) Mentoring Program. She will focus the resources of that group to implement a special
outreach program to Italian-American youth in Boston.
MENTORING USA programs are operating in two sites in New Hampshire
MENTORING USA programs are being implemented in Washington State in the communi-
ties around the Metoe Valley (Spokane area).
MENTORING USA programs are planned for implementation in Kentucky.
MENTORING USA programs will be introduced to the H.E.L.P. initiatives in Philadelphia.
MENTORING USA programs are presently operating internationally in Italy and in Spain.

he New York State experience with mentoring-which already has encouraged
hundreds of youngsters to stay in school-can serve as a national model.
Five Stages to Establishing a Similar Program:
The Planning Stage includes a needs assessment and the hiring of an executive director. The
mission and goals are defined at this time and target populations are indentified.
In the Design Stage, the organizational structure is clarified, staff is hired and specific
objectives are developed. At this point, the mentoring model is finalized.
During the Development Stage, an organizational stucture is established and plans for
implementation are developed. The roles of all public and private entities are defined and a board
is established.
The Implementation Stage involves the launching of mentoring programs in the schools and
further development of school/business partnerships. Staff members work to recruit mentor
sources and schools, identifying contacts and coordinators to oversee school programs.
School-based planning meetings take place during this stage. Ultimately, mentors and school
coordinators are screened and trained. Parents and mentees are introduced to the mentoring
program. Then, school coordinators work to match mentors and mentees and provide mentor/
mentee pairs with continuing support.
The Support Stage is the fifth and final step. Staff members of the mentoring program
provide technical assistance to school coordinators and various mentor groups. Recruitment
and training of new mentors continues. Active mentors and participants are recognized for their
contributions. Financial assistance is provided to schools whenever possible from 501C3
donations. Discussion groups with volunteers are organized, and continuing evaluation of the
program is conducted.

It was a true honor and pleasure to hear you speak at Wellesley College on January 19th.
You were so kind to take the time to meet with all of us following the speech, although I
am sure you and your hands must have been exhausted by the end of the evening!
I thought you might be interested in receiving the background materials to the suffragette
pin which I gave you that evening. It has such an interesting history and certainly speaks
to the courage of women. It serves as a reminder I believe, that courageous women from
1917 are reaching across the span of time to encourage you and give you hope as you
meet the challenges you face. You have raised so many issues so eloquently but none so
important as those affecting children in this country. We have much work to do as a
people of one of the most prosperous countries in the world. The issues which affect
children are the issues which must affect us all.
I believe in the proverb "It takes a village to raise a child," I also believe in another
African proverb which says "Unless you call out who will open the door?"
Please continue to call out, loudly, strongly, with conviction and passion. Please do not
abandon our children to those who are working to diffuse the power of your message.

your work and your vision.

My teachers and my classmates were very impressed. I have
read some of your book and it kind of reminds me of the
surrounding that I live in. Everywhere I go, I learn
something new. In school I learn about my religion and my
culture. At home I learn about the value of family. And at
our shul I learn how to put them all together. That is
what my interpretation of "It Takes a Village To Raise a
Child" means / that not only your home surroundings can
teach you things but that is every ones' job in the
community to help educate the children.

On behalf of Kathy and myself I want to express my appreciation for
the honor that you bestowed on us this evening by including us at the
State dinner for the President of Italy.
As a third generation immigrant, my thoughts turned to my paternal
grandmother, the matriarch of my family. She had an extraordinarily
hard life as she shepherded her family during the great depression
and ranged over successive generations. But through her children,
and her children's children she has realized her dream. On her
behalf, I thank you.
On yet another personal note, I particularly thank you. When Kathy
and I first married, we could not afford a honeymoon. The memory of
this omission has continued as we have built our lives together the
past 22 years bittersweet; something that no amount of success or
wealth has been able to erase. However, as we left the White House,
its warm glows emanating Kathy's face, she turned and whispered,
"This makes up for the honeymoon!"

Dear Hillary,
Congratulations! I hope you are enthusiastic about another four years in the White House.
When you think about the constant scrutiny, it's sort of a mixed blessing, isn't it? But we are ever
optimistic that you and the President will be able to fulfill most, if not all, of your goals during the
remainder of your tenure there.
I'm sure you are aware that the health care situation continues to decline. For example,
according to a recent television report, some HMOs are treating a radical mastectomy as "outpatient
surgery," sending the patient home the same day! As government employees, we are supposed to
have some of the best insurance several choices, reasonable rates, etc. But with this new "open
season," our coverage for the coming year does not include Sparks Regional Hospital or Holt Krock
Clinic under either Blue Cross or GEHA. Instead, both companies are using St. Edward and Cooper
Clinic as the preferred providers. No doubt it will save money for the insurance companies since
some people will use Sparks and Holt Krock anyway, and be left with larger medical bills. I think it
should have been characterized as an Insurance problem rather than a Health Care problem.
I don't think P.K. is going to let me apply for the three-week "detail" to EOUSA. He says it
would be OK for the larger U.S. Attorney's Offices, which have more support staff, but our small
office needs someone available to manage witnesses. That's not all I do, of course, but that's what
he is most aware of. While it is nice to be needed, I wish he would let me go so that I would have
an opportunity to advance my career. 1 haven't heard anything from Eric Holder at the U.S.
Attorney's Office in D.C. about the STOP grant (to prosecute domestic violence cases) or from
Eleanor Achison at the Office for Policy Development. I sent resumes to both of them. It is really
hard to find out what is available when you're not in the loop.
Thanksgiving and Christmas are almost here. Time flies this part of the year.

LECC/Victim-Witness Coordinator and Special Assistant United States Attorney --
As law enforcement coordinator, I arrange training sessions and publish a quarterly
newsletter, Justice For All, to promote cooperation and communication among the
federal, state, and local law enforcement community in the 34 counties that make up the
Western District of Arkansas. To ensure that victims of crime are not victimized again by
the criminal justice system, I work with investigative agencies, prosecutors, and probation
officers to provide counseling, information, consultation, restitution, and other help to
crime victims. I also assist witnesses at trial. As Special Assistant U.S. Attorney, I have
handled arraignments and probation revocations and prosecuted misdemeanor cases in
Magistrate's Court in the Fort Smith, Hot Springs, and Harrison Divisions.
Legal Secretary -- I was a legal secretary for eleven years in Texas and in Arkansas. My
duties included typing, answering telephones, taking dictation, machine transcription,
filing, bookkeeping, doing payroll and quarterly reports, preparing FmHA documents for
loan closings, and other related activities. I also worked as a secretary for an abstract
company for two years, checking liens, judgments, taxes, and lis pendens at the
courthouse and typing documents which could not be read on microfilm.

Congratulations! I hope you are enthusiastic about another four years in the White House.
When you think about the constant scrutiny, it's sort of a mixed blessing, isn't it? But we are ever
optimistic that you and the President will be able to fulfill most, if not all, of your goals during the
remainder of your tenure there.
I'm sure you are aware that the health care situation continues to decline. For example,
according to a recent television report, some HMOs are treating a radical mastectomy as "outpatient
surgery," sending the patient home the same day! As government employees, we are supposed to
have some of the best insurance several choices, reasonable rates, etc. But with this new "open
season," our coverage for the coming year does not include Sparks Regional Hospital or Holt Krock
Clinic under either Blue Cross or GEHA. Instead, both companies are using St. Edward and Cooper
Clinic as the preferred providers. No doubt it will save money for the insurance companies since
some people will use Sparks and Holt Krock anyway, and be left with larger medical bills. I think it
should have been characterized as an Insurance problem rather than a Health Care problem.
I don't think P.K. is going to let me apply for the three-week "detail" to EOUSA. He says it
would be OK for the larger U.S. Attorney's Offices, which have more support staff, but our small
office needs someone available to manage witnesses. That's not all I do, of course, but that's what
he is most aware of. While it is nice to be needed, I wish he would let me go so that I would have
an opportunity to advance my career. I haven't heard anything from Eric Holder at the U.S.
Attorney's Office in D.C. about the STOP grant (to prosecute domestic violence cases) or from
Eleanor Achison at the Office for Policy Development. I sent resumes to both of them. It is really
hard to find out what is available when you're not in the loop.
Thanksgiving and Christmas are almost here. Time flies this part of the year.

Dear Hillary,
Did you have a happy birthday? I was thinking of you (and Tara) as I traveled home from a
conference for LECC/VW Coordinators in Panama City, Florida. It was less expensive to drive than
to fly, and it was a nice trip until the rain and fog started at Pine Bluff on the way home.
It was a very good conference. In addition to getting useful information for our office, I also
found out that Eric Holder got funds to prosecute domestic violence cases in Washington, DC, as
part of the Violence Against Women Act. Needless-to-say, I fired off a letter and resume tonight.
That position is just made for me, if it isn't filled already!
Also met Eleanor D. Acheson, Assistant AG for the Office of Policy Development. She gave
a very interesting and knowledgeable presentation on the progress of the Victim Rights Constitutional
Amendment. I talked to her for quite awhile, and I've sent a resume to her too.
Ms. Reno gave me the name of her personnel contact, although she indicated there were no
openings at present. I haven't followed through on that yet.
I don't think I'll have much luck getting into EOUSA. They seem pretty well entrenched.
Although the Director mentioned that they have applied for a position for a lawyer devoted to victim
issues, which hasn't been approved yet, I met a woman from the Office of Legal Education (which
is moving out of DC soon), who said she didn't want to move so she would be joining the LECC/VW
Staff in February. So, it's probably a done deal. They also mentioned a six-week "detail," which
would be a nice way to get to DC to do some work and look around, if P.K. would approve of me
going. He wasn't too keen on it when I asked a couple of years ago.
So that's the update on my job search. I don't know if you even got my other letter. I'm sure
you've been on the "campaign trail" and haven't had time to even think of such things, and I'm not real
sure it was even appropriate for me to ask for your help with something at DOJ. But if anything
comes up in the White House area, please think about us.
I wish the election was already over, don't you? Oh well. As my mom says, "Don't wish your
life away." Ha! Lots of people here have already voted. You know, they're doing that new thing
where you can vote any time. Hang in there, Hillary. I want to dance at the inauguration ball!
