Thank you for writing to share with me
your company's efforts and commitment to
preventing underage drinking. The
encouraging fact that alcohol-related
fatalities among teenagers have dropped by
50 percent over the past ten years is due
in no small part to private sector
educational initiatives like yours.
The Clinton Administration is also
working hard to prevent underage drinking
and drunk driving accidents. For example,
the Department of Transportation's Safe and
Sober Campaign will focus its programming
efforts to target youth during April, May,
and June -- in time for prom and graduation
season. In addition, we have given grants
to the International Association of Chiefs
of Police so they can sponsor a series of
state workshops on the enforcement of
underage drinking laws.

Dear Mrs. Rodham Clinton:
A while back, a newspaper reporter described the Coors family as "among the bluntest, most
straightforward people around." I'm not sure he intended it as a compliment. But as I see it, if you have
something to say, particularly something important, "blunt" beats "blurry" every time.
We've heard for years from some in the media and various critics of our business that brewers really
wanted underage young people to drink. This in spite of the fact that we and other brewers fund many
solid efforts to discourage underage drinking (the enclosed brochure describes our programs). The simple
truth is: We do not want underage consumers, period. No brewer I know wants them. No parent I know
wants it.
Maybe it is time for bluntness.
So, in a commercial we made recently, I address young people who might be thinking about drinking
before they're 21. I tell them precisely what I've told my own children countless times. Looking right in
their eyes, I say, "Do us, and yourself, a favor. Please don't."
As a public policy maker, I know you are asked to "do something" about the problems of underage
consumption. And often the response is restrictive, product control oriented legislation which, while well
intentioned, doesn't do much to help solve these problems. There are, however, areas such as youth
development block grants supports community based prevention efforts where Federal involvement can
help. I encourage you to consider proposals Senator Kassebaum and Representative Goodling are working
on in this area.
Bottom line, no one approach, no one program, indeed no one commercial is the sole answer to this
serious problem. But taken altogether, education and prevention programs are working. And our blunt
imperative "Don't"- lets everybody know where Coors stands.
When it comes to reducing underage drinking, we will not fail from lack of resolve.

Thank you for writing to share with me information about
temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disfunction and related myofascial
pain disorders.
I was particularly interested to hear about the leadership
of the National Institutes of Health in the effort to get more
data about how to treat TMJ disorders. So much damage has been
caused by TMJ implants and inappropriate treatments. You and
your organization are to be commended for encouraging reliable
research that will help us move forward in finding safe and
effective treatments for TMJ.
You also raised the issue of federal funding for TMJ re-
search. The President's proposed 1996 budget includes $4.3
million for TMJ research at the National Institute of Dental
Research (NIDR), an increase of 34 percent over fiscal year 1993.
As you know, NIDR has supported a number of research projects
dealing with TMJ disorders, including the first clinical study
comparing surgical and non-surgical treatments in the management
of patients with temporomandibular joint disc displacements, the
development of research diagnostic criteria for temporomandibular
disorders, and the development of alternative therapies to manage
pain through combinations of drugs as well as non-drug treat-
ments. Representatives from NIDR testified before Congressional
budget committees last week. It is my sincere hope that Congress
will grant the President's budget request to support these
important research efforts.

The TMJ Association, Ltd., is a national 501(c)3 organization founded to promote awareness
of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders; support and education for TMJ patients; and
to encourage basic and clinical research which will ultimately lead to scientifically proven
treatment modalities, resulting in a greatly improved quality of health care and life for the
TMJ patients of this country.

The second reason for this letter is our general concern for how this disorder relates to the
health care reform legislation pending in Congress.
April 17-20, the National Institutes of Health held the first International Workshop on the
Temporomandibular Disorders and Related Pain Conditions. It was concluded that there is
little or no scientific data to support most of the treatment modalities currently being
utilized; that the resulting damage to the patient is potentially devastating; and the need for
basic research to address the TMJ problem is great. The NIH will shortly disseminate these
recommendations and, in several months, the proceedings of the workshop will be published.
This information is important in its relationship to health care coverage, in that it is
imperative that scientifically proven treatment modalities be included while we
concurrently go forward with research protocols. Though few, there are some therapies that
are reversible, conservative, and effective for alleviating pain.
There is another issue -- that of the TMJ implant patient. Many are suffering craniofacial
and systemic pathology as a result of having these implants. They have been harmed by
materials approved by the government and should have all health care costs covered by a
health care policy -- again, while research is conducted to find ways to halt, reverse, or
manage the damage experienced by these people.

family may have. We would also appreciate your cooperation with us in our attempt to have
this disorder emphatically addressed by the Appropriations Committees of Congress so that
research on TMJ disorders and implant pathology goes forward in this upcoming budget
