ALLIANCE FOR BETTER NURSING HOME CARE Building Bridges Program
Building Bridges, a statewide intergenerational program of the Alliance for Better Nursing Home
Care, has been creating and supporting intergenerational visits between classes of children and
nursing home residents since 1985. The Building Bridges Program brings together more than
1,800 children and residents each year for the benefit of both generations.
Building Bridges is:
a unique learning experience for children, one that cannot be gained in the classroom
or from books.
a chance for children to become sensitized to the special needs of the frail elderly
an opportunity to instill the spirit of volunteerism early in life
an introduction to careers in the health care field
an upbeat program which promotes good public relations between the generations and
encourages community involvement.
Children from Head Start Programs, day care centers, and public & private elementary schools
participate and visit residents on a regular and on-going basis throughout the school year. They
do projects together and share experiences. Communication between the children and nursing
home residents is simple and easy, colored by the natural affection found between the
generations. Building Bridges enriches the lives of all who participates.
Building Bridges would be grateful for the opportunity to introduce Mrs. Clinton to an
intergenerational program at Kent Nursing Home in Warwick. We have sclected this 153 bed
nursing facility because of its long-standing relationship with Building Bridges and the Head Start
Program, Child, Inc. Only minutes away from the airport this nursing home will offer an intimate
atmosphere to host this special occasion.
I envision a class (15 children) of four year olds from Child, Inc./Head Start working together
on a special project with an equal number of residents from Kent Nursing Home as part of their
intergenerational visit. Mrs. Clinton would be invited to take part in this activity which
encourages conversation and a good time. The children and residents will also share songs,
play games and be prepared with questions to ask the First Lady if such an opportunity arises.
