Dear Ms. Henning:
It is with great pleasure that I write in support of the
application of Huma Abedin to the White House Internship Program.
Ms. Abedin was my student this spring in a course in Indian
English-Language Literature (English 173: "India in English/English
in India"). Even though the class contained a number of very
gifted students including some senior English majors, Huma Abedin
stood out as the most brilliant student of all.
Huma Abedin is a fine writer. She is equally able at short forms
(brief weekly exercises) and longer research papers. Her final
paper on Ahmed Ali, author of Twilight in Delhi, was so well
researched and so cogently and elegantly written that I had no
choice but to award it an A+. (Such a grade is against my pedagogic
principles--all papers can be improved--but Huma's work was at once
deeply researched, pellucidly written, and remarkably original.)
Because Huma Abedin has access to the memoirs of members of the Ali
family, I urged her to continue work on this project to produce a
publishable article or monograph: she will be working on that
project with me in an Independent Study next fall.
In addition to her eloquence as a writer, Huma Abedin has a
broad range of knowledge--literature, the arts, history, politics--
that makes- her exceptional among her peers. She has lived in
various cultures--the United States, the Middle East, South Asia--
and has made good use of that experience. She has a generous-
minded receptivity to different cultures and different viewpoints.
That receptivity often came out in class discussion where she
showed an ability to resist a rush to judgment on controversial
topics and a willingness to entertain multiple sides of a question.
Huma Abedin is active in the South Asian Students' Association
here at GW. She was instrumental in organizing a high-powered visit
(with major speech and dinner for hundreds of guests) from the

Pakistani Ambassador. She was the MC for a large South Asian Dance
Contest held at GW and --so her classmates told me-- revealed
considerable gifts as a comedienne.
Despite her busy academic and extra-curricular schedule, Huma
Abedin is so efficient that she never seems pressed. She's very
expeditious in getting her work done; indeed she makes it look
easy. I should add too that she's very good humored and sociable.
Altogether Huma Abedin's academic brilliance, good prose, wide-
ranging knowledge, no nonsense efficiency, and general good humor
mark her as a person of rare distinction. I think she would be a
superb White House Intern. Please let me know if I can give you
