Mrs. Clinton knows she can count on the complicity of feminists and Democratic
women in Congress. They accept the trade-off in letting

Also, once you decide it's OK to sacrifice individual women for the greater

interview about "problems" in the Clinton marriage, Hillary Rodham Clinton was
nearly struck on the head by a monstrous, falling hot klieg light.
Already on edge and now
None of the first lady's friends and associates interviewed for this article
would speculate on what the private conversations between Bill and Hillary
Clinton have been like lately. But several said the public persona she has shown
- tough, focused, determined - is the same one she has revealed to close
scandal broke involving former White House intern Monica Lewinsky and an
alleged sexual relationship with the president, it was Hillary Clinton who
brought back top aides Mickey Kantor and Harold Ickes and Hollywood producer
Harry Thomason. It was Hillary Clinton who took tear-stained White House
staffers into her office and reassured them. And it was Hillary Clinton who
convinced the White House media apparatus that she had to speak out in her
husband's defense.
After strategy sessions late
defense of the president on Sunday television talk shows. On Monday the
president stoutly denied the Lewinsky charges.
It was Hillary Clinton who went on television the next day to insist that she
believed him and that there was a "right-wing conspiracy" out to get them both,
headed by Starr.
Hillary Clinton has had at least four prior confrontations with Starr. He
interviewed her in the White House three times about the Whitewater scandal, and
mentioning the allegations, but observers noticed that some of the
warmest applause from the gathered dignitaries was given to the first lady.

The next day Hillary Clinton went on television again, defending her husband,
while her husband refused to talk about the incident further - just as she
said he should. "Because there's
schedule. She has been through this before, and the perspective is that
she can be really focused.' "
Her six years in Washington have been filled with one controversy after
another. Hillary Clinton was burned in effigy over her role in the
administration's failed 1993 proposal for a new health-care
1993.
Then there's the Internet, on which whole sites ridicule and criticize her
without the slightest regard for the truth. One of the mildest is titled
"Hillary Clinton on morphine."
A former White House official who knows Hillary Clinton well said last week
that when the couple came to Washington, "and all these attacks started to come
- Whitewater, attacks on the health-
Bill Clinton's avoidance of the draft and his statement that he "didn't
inhale" marijuana were behind them. They were asked about whether running for
president was too hard.
Hillary Clinton fed her husband the line, taken from the film "A League of
Their Own,' in which Tom Hanks, playing the coach of a women's
Clintons' difficulties, the first lady said, they have worked to keep
their romance alive.

interview with American Urban Radio Networks reporter April Ryan about her

Clinton put it last week? Or is he a reluctant investigator forced into new
directions because of White House obstructionism and new evidence of
given rise to the expansion of Starr's mandate, some of which has come at
Attorney General Janet Reno's request.
The unprecedented appearance of Hillary Clinton before a grand jury two years
ago illustrates the gulf between the Starr and Clinton camps. The White House
Clinton despite a grant of immunity.
Then, in January 1996, the Rose Law Firm billing records - related to work
that Hillary Clinton did for the McDougals' Madison Guaranty Savings & Loan -
were discovered in a private area of the White House, opening a new
investigation. That, too, was stalled with litigation over whether notes by
White House lawyers of their meetings with Hillary Clinton were shielded by
attorney-client privilege - an issue Starr's office won in June.
Starr has opened inquiries
former associate attorney general Hubbell to ensure his silence on
Whitewater matters. Hubbell, a former law partner of Hillary Clinton's, resigned
from the Justice Department before pleading guilty to fraud and tax evasion
while in private practice.

Hillary Clinton's role that year, as always, was even more pivotal. Political
scientists say it is doubtful that Clinton would be president today if she had

Anticipating the Oliver Stone movie version of all this, Hillary Rodham
Clinton supplied the "man on the grassy knoll" culprit. And, lo, the man is
Jerry Falwell.

argue the facts; if you have neither, pound the table. Hillary Clinton's
table-pounding about the vast conspiracy continued Wednesday morning when she
said on ABC, "I'm interested in what the facts are, and we
facts right now. "
"We"? The man across from her at the breakfast table surely has lots of
pertinent facts right now. So Hillary Clinton might begin to slake her thirst
for facts by saying:
"Pass the marmalade, and by the way, is the New York Times
woman" is the president's dismissive designation of her to whom he
reportedly gave that private December meeting, and an inscribed book of poetry,
and he knows what else. (Hillary Clinton is not surprised by all this giving,
because "he is an extremely generous person" "I mean, I've seen him take his tie
rarely prosecuted in civil cases. "
Perhaps she got that insight from "Vernon. " That apparently is her way of
speaking of Vernon Jordan, who Hillary Clinton says is so "outgoing and
friendly" that there is just no telling what he will do for little people.
On Monday the president took
four years after President Nixon said in a State of the Union address
that "one year of Watergate is enough, " Hillary Clinton, the point of the White
House spear, is saying that one week of Lewinsky suffices, and it is time to get

WASHINGTON At the most superficial level, the White House campaign to
attribute President Clinton's problems to what Hillary Rodham Clinton calls "a
vast right-wing conspiracy" seems to make some political sense.
At the least, it provides
Frequent rebroadcasts
That survey was made immediately after Mrs. Clinton's frequently rebroadcast
appearance on the network morning television news program in which she made the
charges. And polling experts will
impressionable and often inclined to feed back to polls the latest thing
they have heard. But the number is still impressive.
In this case, Mrs. Clinton's accusation gains some weight because the woods
are indeed full of right-wing extremists who have been ranting and raving
against her husband
Mr. Starr was given the new portfolio with the specific approval of
Attorney General Janet Reno.
The bottom line is that the White House and Mrs. Clinton can make a case that
seems to have a certain elemental logic, but one that cannot prevail over the
