This center is an outstanding example of what we can accomplish when we commit to
working together on behalf of our children. The village is truly at work here in Los
Angeles. Who would have thought when Sister Jennie first began tutoring for Los
Angeles public schools more than a decade ago that PUENTE would become what it is
today.
This community recognized not only the value of education, but also the strength and
power of the people who live and work here. All of those who contributed to the success
of PUENTE understood that investing in children is crucial for the stability and
prosperity of individual families and of the larger community. PUENTE is a model for
the rest of the nation.
As the President said, it is our duty as Americans to build a bridge to the 21st century.
Isn't it appropriate that the name of this center--PUENTE--means "bridge" in Spanish?
We live in an extraordinary time. Our children will face unprecedented opportunities as
well as challenges wrought by global competition and advances in technology. Here at
the PUENTE Learning Center, you're building a bridge to the 21 st century by building a
bridge to a lifetime of learning.
In the last four years and for the next four years the President has worked and will work
to ensure that every American has the opportunity to fulfill his or her God-given
potential. Ensuring a prosperous, safe and healthy future requires that we work together,
take responsibility, provide opportunity, and strengthen communities. One way we do
that is by investing in education -- a cornerstone of our democracy.
That's why the President has fought hard to expand Head Start, to protect college loans,
to raise school standards and to give communities more say in how they run their schools.
To help communities enforce attendance and reduce gang and drug-related violence
through school uniforms and curfew policies.
Last month the President introduced a new literacy initiative to guarantee that every child
in America can read by age eight. His goal is to send 30,000 reading specialists and
national service corps members to mobilize an army of one million reading tutors for 3rd
graders all across America. The President has also proposed a $1,500 a year tuition tax
credit that will make community college free for any American who is willing to study
hard. He will see to it that every working family can also deduct up to $10,000 a year in
college tuition costs and save money for college in tax-free IRAs.
