Dear Mr. Ickes:
I want to thank you personally for the time that you gave to the
Executive Committee and other participants on behalf of the National
Jewish Democratic Council. All of us, as you know, are quite
anxious to do what we can to help effect a Democratic victory in
1996.
I am proud to be part of a party that has leadership of your
quality.
Harold, I have talked to the President of the American Trial Lawyers
Association since my brief conversation with you on the subject
after the meeting. I believe that it is very important from a
fundraising standpoint that the President speak out in support of
the positions that he took on products liability and otherwise
during the 1992 campaign. We were able to raise literally millions
of dollars because of George Bush's lawyer bashing. I understand
the sensitivities that surround this issue, but from a campaign
finance standpoint, the trial lawyers should not be ignored.
At the same time, I hasten to add that my personal commitment is to
do everything that I possibly can to assist in the re-election of
Bill Clinton as President of the United States. He is by far the
most intelligent issue-oriented and hard working president we have
had during my lifetime. I believe that he is our best hope to
return civility to American life.
I very much appreciated your genuine interest and the comments made
by our group. I also hasten to add, Harold, that President Clinton
has been the best president for Jewish Americans and their issues in
