MEMORANDUM FOR HAROLD ICKES
Spoke to Quality
FROM:

Phil Caplan
SUBJECT: Telephone call to Steven Spielberg
Six weeks ago or so, we helped Spielberg by making a few phone calls to the Hill to save
a $1 million appropriation for the Shoah Visual History Foundation The $1M was part,
of the Department of Education's budget (in the Omnibus Appropriations Bill) that the
President signed on April 26.
Spielberg set up the Shoah Foundation after he made Schindler's List. He largely funds
the Foundation, but felt it was important for the U.S. Government to support the project
in some way.
The Foundation will videotape eyewitness accounts of the Holocaust and develop a
comprehensive on-line multimedia archive of survivor testimonies. By 1997, the archive
will be available in five museums including the Simon Weisenthal Center in LA and the
Holocaust Museum here in town.
Spielberg should know that it was our phone calls that helped keep the appropriation in
the bill last month. You should call him to let him know that the check will soon be cut
by Education and on its way to the Foundation.
You also might want to consider offering Spielberg some sort of presentation of the grant
with an Administration official.
