probably, the most unorthodox Fourth of July I could spend.
JULY 5- Tuesday
Still firmly set in the ice and we found that during the
night the moving cakes had bent one blade of our propeller so it can-
not turn. All hands on a line over the bow pulled her about a hun-
dred feet up a little lead and we made fast again. Lots of pictures
taken, and a football game on the ice pan furnished unnecessary ex-
ercise and got all soaked through. A light snow falling all the time.
Turned in after lunch and G.P. wakened me at 4 o'clock to see what was
up. Somehow we had got loose and were under full sail tearing along
among the floes. The launch and whaleboat were over the side helping
to guide her stern and push through the heavy parts. The snow wag
heavier and drove bitingly across us in the stiff breeze. The skipper
in the crow's nest was bawling orders to the deck and keeping all
hands busy. The sails were going up and down and in and out on an
average of one a minute. We moved on until about 7 or 8 o'clock,
when the ice closed in again and we made fast to a large pan. Under
the direction of Bob Peary, a large pan was towed across her stern
and all hands helped in efforts to straighten out the bent blade.
Three hour's work gained us nothing but a snapped two inch hawser
and a cable lost to the bottom, so here we stay. Not much nearer to
-
land than when we started. Oilskins are the only thing for this
