first day out from Rye. All morning on deck without a sweater or
jacket of any kind; was most comfortable. The water was without a
ripple as we coasted up to Cape Chidley and the Button Islands. The
ice here is solid, however, and all afternoon is spent going up and
down, hack and forth on this mirror, bounded by gleaming white, wait-
ing for an opening to the North. The ice is always in motion and
were we to stop in any one place, we would soon be beset again.
Tonight, standing out on the bowsprit looking down into
the calm water gave the impression of sailing through the sky. No
vibration and no noise- the clouds and sunset reflected in every
detail below; a time of unusual peace and quiet.
JULY 16- Saturday
Still muddling around the coast waiting for the ice to
meke up its mind. About noon we struck off out to sea, eastward, and
by four o' clock had passed through the outside pack. Still fooling
around this evening trying to work northward. Tied up about ten
o'clock to a large pan for the night. An overcast day with heavy
gray clouds speeding low over us and during the afternoon slight rain.
Solid ice in every direction.
All hands up late in the cabin as the skipper has a
cup of tea and dispenses his opinion of the weather, the buttons on
his coat, and the American Mercury. His idea of the height of comfort-.
