Rufus and I slept on board, the others in a tent on shore. I had
the novel experience next morning of wringing out my socks and put-
ting them on as dry as that left them--and cold. Lots of pictures
were taken after breakfast of getting white Bruin aboard the whale
boat, then after a couple of hours surveying, we started back around
Mill Island; arrived about 7 PM and the coldest it has been- all
hands and feet nearly frozen.
AUGUST 2 - Tuesday
Yesterday we left Mill Island and had a rolling journey
all day. This morning we were awakened at about 6:30 by the call
of "bear" and then things started happening! G.P. and I went out
in the Meraco after him- I rowing, the Director to take pictures.
We must have been an odd sight. I row to about five or ten feet
from him and he swims and as he turns on us, I row to beat hell and
G.P. holds the movie camera in his face. The pictures should be
good, though! Then we get in the launch and as we go by him, I
throw a lariat over his head, then he begins to get mad. When he
gets his claws on ice, we can't move him and what a wonderful picture
he makes, standing massive on a pan about fifteen feet away, roaring
his head off and trying to fight the rope. Then his attitude changes
like a flash. He sits down, shivers all over and has the altogether
pitiful look of a cold, tired, wet teddy bear. Thus he alternates
