roneous statements:
First. The numbers given for the census of the
years 1820, 1830, and 1840 contain errors of from one
to fifteen thousand, which give Mr. Watson's esti-
mates considerable wider margin.
Second. By no possible calculation, having the
facts for a basis, can the total effect of the warbe
shown to depress the population beyond 2,000,000
in 1870, and hence not beyond 2,500,000 in 1880.
Third. The census of1880 was 50,152,589. Watson's
estimate was 56,450,000. This seems to make Wat-
son's error in 1880 something over 6,000,000, instead
of 5,000,000.

Fourth. The fact is, Watson's predictions beyond
1850 are among the most erroneous ever made.
