'Romeo and Juliet." [1880] In speaking of Emma Abbott as "Juliet" in Gounod's Grand opera "Romeo and Juliet" which we are to have with the Abbott Opera Company in Washington this week. The Courier-Fournal says: All last summer, when even nature took a vacation, she worked hard on the details, and the result has been a triumphant success all over America. The music is in Gounod's highest dramatic vein, and the libretto affords some fine opportuni- ties for emotional and tragic acting. In the first act is a waltz of rare beauty, the only "catchy" melody of the opera. In the second is a fine love duo and the elebrated balcony scene, in which Romeo mounts the ladder to "my lady's balcony," and the most beautiful tableau in moonlight closes with the "Abbott Kiss," which has become famous as the only correct model. The third act introduces a very melodious quartet and the spirited duel scene. The fourth act, or chamber sccne, introduces the duo, "O, Night of Love Divine." A superb effort. The "potion scene" follows, although the curtain separates them. The whole of this is from the Marquis d' Ivry's "Lover of Verona." and is set into the work bodily at Miss Abbott's command."
