In all this orgie of unmitigated and uncon-
trolled perversion of the public mind, not one
line, not one word of contradiction came
from any source, to act as an antidote to the
poison ; SO that would you believe it?-
many Americans, even of those living abroad,
finished by yelling for the Panama loan !
There was nothing now apparently to do
but to open the gates and let the crowds rush
in. But to make the thing more sure it was
announced on the first day of the loan, in all
the papers of Paris, that M. De Lesseps had
obtained the consent of the American govern-
ment and people to the scheme, that all ob-
stacles in the United States had been re-
moved, that his figures had been confirmed
by engineers everywhere, and on the strength
of these deceptive assurances hundreds of
