15 18 Not SO the Egyptian, in whose creed The vedic hymns, the Aryans sung, The future life prevailed, A future life maintained, Not merely the belief indeed, And all who from that race have sprung But much that it entailed. Have that belief retained. Who thought a spirit, until death, To him, they sung, ascends our prayers Dwelt in each mortal frame, By whom all things were done, Which, on the ceasing of our breath, For although many names he bears, Before Osiris came. There ever is but one. 16. 19 And if the life had here been just Then out of Israel Jesus came, It found a state of bliss; The highest form of man If not, that then the spirit must The world has seen, or we can name, Return again to this, Since first the race began. An unseen being, here to dwell, Who came, all other things above, With human wants and fears, A future life to teach, And much of suffering as well, And with repentance, faith and love, Through many thousand years. What all mankind may reach. 17 20 Uncounted years had passed away The narrow, selfish, Jewish view, Since Chaldea's early time, Which had prevailed till then, And Babylon and Assyria That Israel was God's chosen few And Persia reached their prime; From out the race of men, Yet in them all a future life Jesus ignored, and showed, instead, Of some kind was conceived, That all the human race Which, mid their progress, arts or strife, Of every kind, wherever spread, They steadily believed. God's love and care embrace.
