T MAKES me very weary
When I think of Cook and Peary
Claiming any such distinction
As the finding of the Pole.
For many years ago,

In the zone of ice and snow,
It was I who first cast eyes upon
The upper Polar Goal.
For fear 'twould draw attention
To me, I did not mention
The fact that I'd discovered
Any part of it all.
But now when there's a doubt
What explorers are about,
I must forsake my modesty,
And say I made the call.
