United States Veteran's Bureau,
Waynesville, N.C.
April 18, 1923.
Mrs. Isabelle W. Baker,
National Director of Home Hygiene,
Washington, D.C.
My dear Mrs. Baker:
I am a Follow-up nurse with the U.S. Veterans' Bureau
stationed at Waynesville, N.C. in the U.S.V.B. Vocational School.
At present there are about three hundred ex-service men, all arrested
cases of tuberculosis, taking vocational training at this school.
More than half of these young men are married and live with their
families in the village and scattered throughout the surrounding
country. Part of my duties at this Center is to visit the homes of the
man and report on the conditions of health and sanitation. I have been
much dismayed at some of the conditions existing in the homes. Many of
the wives are extremely young and appallingly ignorant of the simplest
rules of right living, cleanliness and sanitation.
It has seemed to me that some classes in Home Hygiene and
Care of the Sick would do a great deal toward instructing these women
in the proper care of their homes, besides helping their husbands back
to lives of health and usefulness. I have discussed the matter with
Mrs. West, who is also here in the capacity of Follow-up Nurse, the Director
of the School and his Assistant, also with the Medical Officer in Charge
and his Assistant and they are all agreed that such instruction would be
invaluable in Waynesville.
Am a graduate, registered nurse and have been enrolled in the
A.R. C. Nursing Service since 1914, badge No. 5441. During the war served
overseas with the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps. In 1919 was a member of the
A.R. C. commission to Siberia, and served with the A.R.C. Polish Unit from
May
1920 to June 1922. Taught classes in Home Hygiene and Care of the
Sick in Zakopane and Skierniewice, Poland, this being the extent of my
teaching experience.
If this matter meets with your approval, would you kindly send
me the necessary literature and advise me as to the procuring of necessary
equipment. I have a copy of the Delano book on Home Hygiene and Care
of the Sick, but perhaps you may have many other things that would be a help
in organizing and carrying on the classes.
With many thanks for any attention you may give this matter,
I am
Yours truly,
(Signed)
MARGARET D. MCCAUGHEY, R.N.
