Baker,\nNational Director of Home Hygiene,\nWashington, D.C.\nMy dear Mrs. Baker:\nI am a Follow-up nurse with the U.S. Veterans' Bureau\nstationed at Waynesville, N.C. in the U.S.V.B. Vocational School.\nAt present there are about three hundred ex-service men, all arrested\ncases of tuberculosis, taking vocational training at this school.\nMore than half of these young men are married and live with their\nfamilies in the village and scattered throughout the surrounding\ncountry. Part of my duties at this Center is to visit the homes of the\nman and report on the conditions of health and sanitation. I have been\nmuch dismayed at some of the conditions existing in the homes. Many of\nthe wives are extremely young and appallingly ignorant of the simplest\nrules of right living, cleanliness and sanitation.\nIt has seemed to me that some classes in Home Hygiene and\nCare of the Sick would do a great deal toward instructing these women\nin the proper care of their homes, besides helping their husbands back\nto lives of health and usefulness. I have discussed the matter with\nMrs. West, who is also here in the capacity of Follow-up Nurse, the Director\nof the School and his Assistant, also with the Medical Officer in Charge\nand his Assistant and they are all agreed that such instruction would be\ninvaluable in Waynesville.\nAm a graduate, registered nurse and have been enrolled in the\nA.R. C. Nursing Service since 1914, badge No. 5441. During the war served\noverseas with the U.S. Navy Nurse Corps. In 1919 was a member of the\nA.R. C. commission to Siberia, and served with the A.R.C. Polish Unit from\nMay\n1920 to June 1922. Taught classes in Home Hygiene and Care of the\nSick in Zakopane and Skierniewice, Poland, this being the extent of my\nteaching experience.\nIf this matter meets with your approval, would you kindly send\nme the necessary literature and advise me as to the procuring of necessary\nequipment. I have a copy of the Delano book on Home Hygiene and Care\nof the Sick, but perhaps you may have many other things that would be a help\nin organizing and carrying on the classes.\nWith many thanks for any attention you may give this matter,\nI am\nYours truly,\n(Signed)\nMARGARET D.
