DICTIONARY OF AMERICAN BIOGRAPHY See instru tions on reverse sid 6 Title: ALICE FITZGERALD (Do not write in this (Do not write space) in this space) 1 Pratt. 2 By the time she retired in 1948, Alice 3 Fitzgerald was the recipient of numerous 4 awards, among them the Florence Nightingale 5 Medal presented by the International 6 Committee of the Red Cross in 1927 and 7 regarded as the highest honor accorded a 8 nurse. Her other awards include the British 9 Royal Red Cross Medal, the British Campaign 10 Medal, the Medaille de la Reconnaissance 11 Francaise, and the Silver Medal of the rolish Red Cross. Unduly modest, the 12 Italian born, former debutante who 13 pioneered in international nursing chose 14 to view her honors as awards to the nursing 15 profession rather than to an individual. 16 Miss Fitzgerald spent her last years 17 at the Peabody Home in the Bronx, N.Y. 18 where she died on November 10, 1962. In an 19 interview conducted several years before 20 her death, she summarized her career, say- 21 ing: "I have had a lovely life. 1 was so 22 happy in my work in all those countries 23 that I never took a vacation.
