1
Pratt.
2
By the time she retired in 1948, Alice
3
Fitzgerald was the recipient of numerous
4
awards, among them the Florence Nightingale
5
Medal presented by the International
6
Committee of the Red Cross in 1927 and
7
regarded as the highest honor accorded a
8
nurse. Her other awards include the British
9
Royal Red Cross Medal, the British Campaign
10
Medal, the Medaille de la Reconnaissance
11
Francaise, and the Silver Medal of the
rolish Red Cross. Unduly modest, the
12
Italian born, former debutante who
13
pioneered in international nursing chose
14
to view her honors as awards to the nursing
15
profession rather than to an individual.
16
Miss Fitzgerald spent her last years
17
at the Peabody Home in the Bronx, N.Y.
18
where she died on November 10, 1962. In an
19
interview conducted several years before
20
her death, she summarized her career, say-
21
ing: "I have had a lovely life. 1 was so
22
happy in my work in all those countries
23
that I never took a vacation. Work was
24
recreation
