Dear Mr. McIntyre:
During the latter part of last September,
the writer, together with Mr. Monte Hance and Mr.
Paul Tiblier, called at the White House and left
a case of canned Biloxi shrimp for President Roose-
velt. We also left some photographs of Gulf fish-
ing for the President in regard to the annual con-
ference of Governors of the various states to be
held here about June 1st.

We would like to know whether or not the
President saw these photographs, and if so, what
type of fishing appeals to him. I understand that
he is fond of catching bone or lady fish. Is this
correct?
Thanking you, I am with best wishes

the practise of law in Boston (but not in New York) affords

Dear President Roosevelt;
I am taking the opportunity of sending
a pencil drawing of your likeness which I believe will be inter-

I am twenty-four years old and although I have had a great
deal of experience as an artist there seems to be a great chasm
in front of me which I cannot cross to be financially able to live.
As I have two dependents at home, my mother and sister, it leaves
me in a rather dubious outlook for the future.
If you can but offer me any advice as to how I can possibly
avoid the obstacles in the way and reach the road to "Prosperity",
it will be the greatest moment of my life and I shall forever be
grateful for the aid received in this hour of need.

Your letter of recent date has been
received, and I want to thank you warmly in
behalf of the President for the hand-made
windmill which you sent him.
While the President is deeply grateful
for the sacrifice you have made, and for the
fine motive which prompted you to present the
gift to him, he feels that he should not accept
it and thus deprive you of an opportunity to
receive financial assistance through the sale
of it. The windmill is therefore being returned
with the suggestion that you try to sell it.
Please be assured that your kind thought is none
the less appreciated.
Very sincerely yours,

Name and address of writer: Adam Haar,
1625 Stanley Street, W.S.,

money for the purchase of material for a wind mill.
Request made in communication: The writer asks the Presi-
dent to accept his gift. He also asks for a reply.
Remarks: Enclosure: Bill of lading and a sketch showing
how the mill is to be put together.

Dear President:
Probably you are familiar with If battleship chess ",
a famous old navy game played with pads of paper and
pencil. I send ou herewith If self recording battleship
chess a new invention that eliminates record keeping
and doubles the speed of play.
I might add that this invention has ended the depression
for the two families of Davies and Heath. Our modest
little shop has been kept quite busy during the fortnight
that we have been in business.
May this little package add to your pleasure in playing
battleship chess. I am quite sure you play since I know

October 27, 1934
Hon. Harry L. Hopkins,
Federal Relief Administrator,
Washington, D.C.
Dear Mr. Hopkins:
I am glad to accede to the request of one of our clients that I forward
to you, for transmission to the President, an electric table lamp fashioned
into the likeness of an old spinning wheel. This is his humble gift, as
one of the forgotten men, to the chief executive who, he feels, has done
so much for him.
ade
This young man is the son of a dry land farmer. When the drougth came he
and his family were compelled to seek relief, much to their sorrow. While
they could have sat down and waited for better times and taken government
ey.
money, he decided there was one way out - the way of self help.
The man had been working this dry farm, and what a task that is you Iowa
ed
folks may know! - his hands had become accustomed to the plow, but, back
in earlier days he had worked in a second hand furniture store to help out
the family and there had learned to use tools.
Bringing this lost art of his to mind he started in to make these little
on?
lamps and to sell them where he could. The income from the sales has
helped the family greatly and made them, at least partially self-supporting.
N
In these days of "chiselers" and "moochers" who sit around and wait for the
u
"government lady" to bring the grocery order this is very encouraging as
showing what can be done with initiative. It is the type of work which
t.
this writer enjoys seeing accomplished.
If you will give this lamp as a present to Mr. Roosevelt and if you or the
White House will write him a letter it will do much to build up real morale
in a man well worthy of your encouragement. Just one in four millions of
your charges!

Dear Miss LeHand,
Mrs T. Charlton Hudson of
Columbus, Georgia, has made a beautiful
screen, which she would like to present to
The President as a gift to the children of
Warm Springs. I saw this screen last Spring
and it is really lovely, and as Mrs Hudson
has spent many hours of work on it just for
the pleasure of doing it I told her that I
would write you about it. The Hudsons are
artistic, charming people who formerly owned
my cottage at Warm Springs. Their address
is " Dinglewood ", Columbus, Georgia.
I am distressed at not being
able to come down this Fall, and have offered
my cottage to Couper Lord, whose little girl
had a bad case of Polio this Spring.
