Harris, Esq., 1111 Blue Hill Avenue, Dorchester, Massachusetts. 1111 Blue Hill Avenue, Dorchester, Massachusetts October 24, 1934 Whitehouse, Washington, D. C. Dear President Roosevelt; I am taking the opportunity of sending a pencil drawing of your likeness which I believe will be inter- esting to you. I am twenty-four years old and although I have had a great deal of experience as an artist there seems to be a great chasm in front of me which I cannot cross to be financially able to live. As I have two dependents at home, my mother and sister, it leaves me in a rather dubious outlook for the future. If you can but offer me any advice as to how I can possibly avoid the obstacles in the way and reach the road to "Prosperity", it will be the greatest moment of my life and I shall forever be grateful for the aid received in this hour of need. 'Y our COPY OF INCOMING LETTER PROWERS COUNTY emergency RELIEF ADMINISTRATION PROWERS COUNTY COLORADO LAMAR COLORADO October 27, 1934 Hon. Harry L. Hopkins, Federal Relief Administrator, Washington, D.C. Dear Mr. Hopkins: I am glad to accede to the request of one of our clients that I forward to you, for transmission to the President, an electric table lamp fashioned into the likeness of an old spinning wheel. This is his humble gift, as one of the forgotten men, to the chief executive who, he feels, has done so much for him. ade This young man is the son of a dry land farmer. When the drougth came he and his family were compelled to seek relief, much to their sorrow. While they could have sat down and waited for better times and taken government ey. money, he decided there was one way out - the way of self help. The man had been working this dry farm, and what a task that is you Iowa ed folks may know! - his hands had become accustomed to the plow, but, back in earlier days he had worked in a second hand furniture store to help out the family and there had learned to use tools. Bringing this lost art of his to mind he started in to make these little on? lamps and to sell them where he could. The income from the sales has helped the family greatly and made them, at least partially self-supporting. N In these days of "chiselers" and "moochers" who sit around and wait for the u "government lady" to bring the grocery order this is very encouraging as showing what can be done with initiative. It is the type of work which t. this writer enjoys seeing accomplished. If you will give this lamp as a present to Mr. Roosevelt and if you or the White House will write him a letter it will do much to build up real morale in a man well worthy of your encouragement. Just one in four millions of your charges! lag. The man's name and address: us 'Y Thomas 0. Dear Mr. Moore:- Thank you for your note of November fifteenth telling us about the screen which Mrs. Hudson wishes to present to the President. I have written her suggesting that she make the presentation at the Thanks- giving dinner. Very sincerely yours, M. A. Le Hand PRIVATE SECRETARY Will Moore, Esq., 7 East 96th Street, New York, N. Y. 7 EAST NINETY-SIXTH STREET Miss Marguerite LeHand, Warm Springs, Georgia. Dear Miss LeHand, Mrs T. Charlton Hudson of Columbus, Georgia, has made a beautiful screen, which she would like to present to The President as a gift to the children of Warm Springs. I saw this screen last Spring and it is really lovely, and as Mrs Hudson has spent many hours of work on it just for the pleasure of doing it I told her that I would write you about it. The Hudsons are artistic, charming people who formerly owned my cottage at Warm Springs. Their address is " Dinglewood ", Columbus, Georgia. I am distressed at not being able to come down this Fall, and have offered my cottage to Couper Lord, whose little girl had a bad case of Polio this Spring. With kindest regards, Sincerely yours, wee moore THE WHITE HOUSE WASHINGTON 11-26-34 Memorandum for Miss LeHand: I believe I would write Mrs. Hudson that the President will be de- lighted to have the screen and that either you or I would be awfully glad to see her and accept it for him. That is what we are doing in all cases like this. M.H.M. OK 11-28-34 Mr. McIntyre: Grace had written the two blue typed letters, and then thought it might not be a good idea to tell the lady to come over on Thanksgiving. Sug- gested she present them through you, so I have written the attached letters for your approval. She says they are Okay with her. MHIT Roberta
