Washington, D. C.
Dear Mr. LeHand:-
Today I was again the recipient of another envelope
containing the President's speech at the White House
Correspondents' Dinner together with your note for which
I am most grateful and thank you muchly, also thanks for
sending one to my sister in Chicago. I certainly prize
these speeches most highly. I also enjoyed the one the
other night from his yacht to the Jackson Day Diners,
altho' the Country was also privileged to hear it too.
Thanks again for saying you would gladly send me
any of his speeches I might care to have. Personally I
shall be happy to receive any you may wish to send me or
for which you may have the time to do SO. My sister, I
know would also be most grateful for any you would send
to her too as she also enjoys them.
The Jackson Day Dinner speech was combined with the
serious and humorous which made is most interesting too
as it took away a little of the present day seriousness
with which we are continually encountering.
Under separate cover, I am sending you a little
package as a very small humble reciprocation of your
kindness in taking your valueable time to send me these
messages.
ONE of my hobbies is photography." I have several. One
is collecting stamps, another is making scrap books of various
prominent people, paintings, pictures of children in magazines,
and books.
If you have never been in Hollywood or Los Angeles, I
thought you would enjoy a visit here via my photographic post
cards, the photography of which I did myself. I took all the
the pictures as you will notice because my name is on all of
them. That is if my name is not, then my initials are, so you
can surely know I took them. I have made dozens of many of
the various pictures and therefore like my name on them to in-
sure the ones to whom I give them, that they are really my own
photography. That is easy for after the picture is developed,
I write my name on the film and thus every picture after that
has my name on it. I do hope you will enjoy your visit here
via these cards.
You will notice on several of the Hollywood Blv'd. cards
radio towers in evidence. These towers are the same ones in
all the various pictures of Hollywood, the pictures having
been taken from different angles. They are the towers of the
Warner Bros. Theatre radio broadcasting system. They are on
top of the WarnerBros' Hollywood Theatre.
Hollywood Blv'd. and Vine St. is called the "HEART OF
HOLLYWOOD" as it is right in the center of Hollywood. The
little Country Church of Hollywood is only one and a half blks.
from Hollywood and Vine.
Pershing Square Park is the very heart of downtown Los
Angeles behind which you see the Biltmore Hotel. You also
will see two different corners of the park, one at 5th and one
at 6th Street.
Ofcourse Aimee Semple McPherson's Temple is world famous
and you have a picture of her too on one of them. The picture
of the Lotus blossoms in Echo Park across the Street from

Angelus Temple grow taller thanca good sized man.
These are the same Lotus Blossoms spoken so often
about in the Bible, and Los Angeles, Japan and Palestine
are the only places where they grow, that is especially
in, such great profusion in large parks. Many people
call them water lilies. To a certain degree, they are,
d forgot to mention that today Isent to the
Presidentia couple of news for articles d wrote + the which
but the very tall ones are the real Lotus blossoms while
that time a Shofe Gensonal like letter them telling too shofe hour he
the very small flat flowers are the real water lilies
as we Americans know them. They are the large white
broad flower, while the Lotus flower is 8. gorgeous pink
flower and not at all like the white low lily.
The "BROWN DERBY" Cafe in Hollywood is quite a
popular rendevous of the Movie people. It was the origi-
nal Movie Cafe, but now there is another. one in Beverly
7
Hills.
The little white sign seen in the distance on the
hills in the picture showing the view from the Regent
Hotel says "HOLLYWOODLAND", a very exclusive residential
section up in the hills. If one was close to the letters
of that sign, they would notice that each letter was the
height of a reguląr telegraph post.
Back east, one does not see Palm trees (or any other
for that matter) growing in the fore-court of a theatre
like at the Chinese Theatre. Many office buildings here
have roof gardens like on top of the theatre as sometimes
there are pent houses up there.
President sends
I thought I would explain a few of the pictures so
that you coul a enjoy them more. Now with many thanks
again, I am,

My dear President Roosevelt:
I am sending you, with my compliments, a copy of Benjamin Gitlow's
I CONFESS. Ordinarily, I would not break into your very busy life by
sending you a book. I CONFESS is not a new book, and it has been
published for more than a year.
You probably know the situation much better than I do. However,
I believe Benjamin Gitlow has something to tell us all in this remarkably
good book of his, I CONFESS.
I have put my hand in yours, and I have followed your leadership.
I do not mean to say that I have lost my own power to choose my own mode
of thought and action. I trust you and I know that you are doing a
splendid job in leading and governing this country at the present time.
There are subversive influences. For instance, when I published
I CONFESS I had three different telephone calls stating to me if I
published any more books like Benjamin Gitlow's I CONFESS, that I would
disappear. The great house of R. H. Macy & Co were so perturbed by the
threats they had on account of selling I CONFESS, that they finally
refused to sell the book.
You may find this book worth while, but on the other hand you
are under no obligations to acknowledge the receipt of the book or to
even look at it unless the book says something to you.
Faithfully yours,

Hon. Franklin D. Roosevelt
President of the United States of America

Washington, D. C.
My dear Mr. President:
The enclosed volume of articles, photographs and maps on the life
and culture of France was published under the patronage of the
High Council of the French Section of the New York World's Fair,
and was dedicated to the friendship of two great countries. the
United States of America and France. You were gracious enough
to send a message of friendship to France which along with your
portrait was given first place in the Golden Book. So far as I
have been able to discover, no copy of this book has been sent
to you, although you, of all people in the world today, appre-
ciate the contribution to civilization which the life portrayed
in its pages has made.
It was my great privilege to design and carry out the printing
of this work. At the time, I was a resident of Paris. Now,
happily, I am established as art printer in this country, and I
plan to become a citizen of the United States.
//
I have tried to think of ways in which I might be able, in some
small measure, to contribute to your program in the present
critical times. It has occurred to me that your policy of the
"Good Neighbor" between the United States and the nations of
South America could be furthered by the publication of a volume
similar to the enclosed, but depicting the cultural, economic,
commercial and political relations among the countries of the
Americas. At present I am engaged in preparing such a Book.
I hope that I will succeed in doing this in a manner which will
further to some extent the "Good Neighbor" policy of this country.

Die 2a Septembris, 1936
During her seminary days, Blessed Cath

visions of the heart of St. Vincent de Paul
and daily manifestations of Our Lord in the
Sacrament of His Love, but it was toward
the close of that memorable year, 1830, that
she was blessed with the three apparitions
of Mary Immaculate, to which we owe the

Miraculous Medal.
The apparitions concerning the Medal
were all very much alike; their nature,
therefore, may be learned from a summary
of Blessed Catherine's account of the heav-
enly visitation which she received on
November 27th:

THE CENTRAL ASSOCIATION OF THE
MIRACULOUS MEDAL was established for a
threefold purpose: to propagate the devotion of the
Miraculous Medal; to assist in the education of young
men for the priesthood, and to aid the Vincentian
Missions in China. It supports its activities by means
of a membership fee of 25 cents a year. The living
and the deceased may be enrolled as members.
Members have offered for them two Novenas of
Masses every month; one beginning on the twentieth
day at Mary's Central Shrine, Germantown, the
other at the Chapel in Paris where Our Lady re-
vealed this devotion to Blessed Catherine. Besides
these Novenas of Masses, others are frequently
offered for them at Lourdes, at St. Andrew "delle
Fratte" in Rome, and at the Shrine of Our Lady of
Victory in Paris.
Promoters of the "Central Association," who form
a band of at least eight members, living or deceased

Masses offered for members. As an added reward for
securing members for the Association at 25 cents
each, Promoters receive the Quarterly Miraculous
