My dear Mr. O'Neill:
Your note of December seventeenth has
been received and I want to thank you, in the
President's behalf, for the enclosed card of
Christmas greetings.
I am sorry indeed not to be able to
arrange an appointment for you. The President
is so extremely busy during these critical days
that it has been necessary to limit his appoint-
ments to those of a strictly official nature. I
am sure you will understand. However, your
friendly thought in wanting the President and Mrs.
Roosevelt to have the ears of "Victory Corn" and

My dear Mr. President:
I am taking the liberty of sending you a
little volume Macmillan's has just published for me.
It is entitled "Behold Thy Mother". Both of my sons
are in the service, and I searched for a book that might
carry a significant message on Mothers' Day, a message
of strength, but free from sentimentalism. I found no
such volume, so turned to the task of writing one. This
book has been sent to each of the more than thirteen hun-
dred chaplains of The Methodist Church now serving with
the armed forces.

I had the high honor in 1934 of meeting your
Mother at Cliveden when your Mother visited Lady Astor.
It is because of the impression she made upon me at that
time and likewise because of my profound respect for you
that I have perhaps forgotten the proprieties and have
sent the little volume along.
Very respectfully yours,

Dear Mr. President:
Knowing that you are interested in this part of the
New England coast and the lobster industry, I am taking
the liberty of sending to you a copy of my first book,
HIGH TIDE AT NOON.
Perhaps it will recall to you some of the pleasant
peace-time hours you spent cruising along the coast. If
ever you passed near the island of Criehaven, near
Matinicus Rock, and wondered about the life these outward
islanders live, this may serve to give you an idea of it.
At any rate, I hope it gives you an enjoyable hour
or two, if you can find the time in your busy days. You
must be very tired sometimes, and perhaps you will find
some slight respite from the problems and stress of the
war in HIGH TIDE AT NOON, if ever a book can help.
Sincerely yours,

two Naval commissions, originally issued to George Parker, one signed by President Jefferson
and the other by President Madison: Says they are not only interesting souvenirs of the
early days of the Navy but also have 8 family association because they always hung in the
old Deleno home at Fair Haven. The President also says that he would like to have the
urn made from the timbers of the frigate "Constitution" and bearing, in Mr. Delano's hand-
writing, a notation of its history (this urn was mentioned in a letter from Mr. O'Melis
dated 9/1/44, at which time he said he would like to make a gift of it to the President).
