GENERAL: The Wright Aeronautical Corporation plant at Lockland, Ohio,
where 27,000 workers are on strike, produces 20% of our requirements of
B-29 engines. This program is now 30% behind schedule.
PACIFIC: A force of more than 400 fighters and bombers hit Tarumizu on
the eastern shore of Kagoshima Bay in the greatest fire raid yet made. City
was left in flames with the smoke billowing to 12,000 feet.
6 August, the Tokyo area was attacked by 97 Iwo Jima-based P-51's.
Six U.S. aircraft were lost; three pilots were rescued.
7 August, approximately 125 Marianas-based B-29's attacked the
Toyokawa naval arsenal. The bombers were escorted by fighters from Iwo Jima.
ATOMIC BOMB: Press reaction to atomic bomb is one of tremendous
excitement and speculation.
Major Richard Bong, leading American ace, was killed yesterday
in California when flying the new jet propelled P-80. Ship disintegrated
following an explosion a few minutes after it left the ground.
