This program is now 30% behind schedule. PACIFIC: A force of more than 400 fighters and bombers hit Tarumizu on the eastern shore of Kagoshima Bay in the greatest fire raid yet made. City was left in flames with the smoke billowing to 12,000 feet. 6 August, the Tokyo area was attacked by 97 Iwo Jima-based P-51's. Six U.S. aircraft were lost; three pilots were rescued. 7 August, approximately 125 Marianas-based B-29's attacked the Toyokawa naval arsenal. The bombers were escorted by fighters from Iwo Jima.
