My dear President Seruggs:
Mr. Ross handed me your letter of the twenty
fifth. I appreciated very much the invitation
to appear as commencement speaker on June
sixth, and I wish I could accept. However, it
won't be possible for me to accept invitations
around that date. I have had to turn down
several, much to my regret.
The affairs of the Congress at that time will
be at a very crucial stage and it undoubtedly
will be necessary for me to be in Washington.
I know you will have a successful commencement
and I wish for you and the University all the
success in the world.
Sincerely yours,
HARRY S. TRUMAN
President Sherman D. Scruggs
