SECRET SECURITY INFORMATION -2 - with long service in agricultural organizations. His fight to check the spread of Nazism led to his imprisonment in 1938 when Hitler in- vaded Austria, and he remained in concentration camps until 1945 except for one brief interval. Upon the reorganization of Austrian conservatives into the People's Party in 1945, he became a member of the first postwar Cabinet and after the elections of that year became Chancellor in recognition of his leadership of the farming groups who form the backbone of the People's Party. An astute statesman, a gallant defender of Austrian interests in the trying postwar years and a man of great personal integrity, he has devoted his primary efforts to the maintenance of the coalition in which his own party and the Socialists are almost equal partners, to the solution of domestic problems and to resistance to Soviet attempts to subvert Austria. He has shown a rare spirit of cooperation with the Western Powers, particularly the United States and a remarkable steadfastness against the Soviets. Additional biographical information is attached. It is suggested that you express to the Chancellor on behalf of the American people admiration for the courageous manner in which he personally, together with the Austrian Government and people, is daily of SECREM SECURITY INFORMATION 6.
