SECRET SECURITY INFORMATION

with long service in agricultural organizations. His fight to check
the spread of Nazism led to his imprisonment in 1938 when Hitler in-
vaded Austria, and he remained in concentration camps until 1945
except for one brief interval. Upon the reorganization of Austrian
conservatives into the People's Party in 1945, he became a member
of the first postwar Cabinet and after the elections of that year
became Chancellor in recognition of his leadership of the farming
groups who form the backbone of the People's Party. An astute
statesman, a gallant defender of Austrian interests in the trying
postwar years and a man of great personal integrity, he has devoted
his primary efforts to the maintenance of the coalition in which
his own party and the Socialists are almost equal partners, to the
solution of domestic problems and to resistance to Soviet attempts
to subvert Austria. He has shown a rare spirit of cooperation with
the Western Powers, particularly the United States and a remarkable
steadfastness against the Soviets. Additional biographical
information is attached.

the American people admiration for the courageous manner in which he
personally, together with the Austrian Government and people, is
