A statement by Foreign Minister Paul van Zeelands made
before Belgian Parliament at 6:20 tonight follows:
Serious events concerning world peace have just happened
in the far east. The Belgian Government has been duly
informed of them. The General Secretary of the United
Nations has apprised us of the Security Council resolu-
tions, adopted as a result of the aggression against
the Korean Republic, and the United States Government
has informed us of the action undertaken this country
in the framework of these resolutions. We have immediately
established close contact with the two countries with which
we are associated within Benelux. The Belgian Government
declares itself ready to answer the appeal of the
United Nations and to furnish the assistance which it
may be asked to give in conformity with the Security
Council resolutions.

Korean Republic, a state which it had recognized last
August and with it maintains diplomatic relations. One
of the supreme objectives of the foreign policy of the
Belgian Government is the maintenance of peace. We
attach the highest importance to the prestige and the
efficacy of the United Nations of which Belgium has
always been and feels itself more than ever in present
circumstances, a faithful member. Therefore we approve
without reservation the action undertaken by the United
States Government, which tends to re-establish peace
in the Pacific area and more particularly in Korea,
south of the 38th parallel.
