SX 2575 23 Apr 50 Rerad W 82153 dated 22nd April from CSGPO. 1. o For your information the following background on the status of planning and preparation for the Whitsun and May Day rallies in Berlin is furnished 2. The West Berlin City Government under Mayor Reuter has announced that participants in the Deutschlandtreffen will not be permitted to enter the western sectors of the city in organized groups. The West Berlin police force has been augmented and now number 12,000. The US, British and French Commanders in Berlin have announced their intention to back Mayor Reuter in a combined effort and to use military force as necessary. Strengths of the Allied garrison follow: A. British. 1. Present strength: 1 squadron armored cars, 3 battalions infantry (about 500 combat each), 1 troop of engineers (48 men), 150 military police. 2. Reinforcements: 150 additional military police will arrive soon, 2 companies of infantry alerted for road movement from zone, 1 battalion of infantry alerted for air. movement from British Zone. B.
