7192 October 30, 1951 Dear Stan: Thanks very much for your letter of the twenty- second which reached me yesterday. There is a great deal of ballyhoo being stirred up by some of my bigoted Protestant friends but I still think we will be able to get the Ambassador to Vatican City through. Mark Clark is well thought of, both here and in Italy, and is a personal friend of the Pope. Tom Murray came in and reported on his visit to Portugal and Spain and he was highly complimentary of the treatment you gave him when he was in Madrid. I was most happy to hear from you. Sincerely yours, HARRY S. TRUMAN Honorable Stanton Griffis American Ambassador American Embassy Madrid, Spain
