CO SUMMARY CONTINUED
Washington, D. C.
July 4, 1945
11:30 PM BEN COHEN to PEGGY CORCORAN.
B--I have got some shots in my arm.
P--I know how you must feel - must be pretty bad?
B--Not bad - oh, it's just not comfortable.
P--How was your dinner?
B--Very nice.
P--Who did they have there?
B--Just MELVIN DOUGLAS and his wife and PRITCH.
P--And yourself, and them. How is SHE?
B--Lost a lot of weight, she doesn't look so very strong.
P--Well, I am surprised she is up and around and able to give parties.
She must be all right.
B--Yea.
P--I think TOM wanted to talk to you, didn't he BEN? Wait just a minute.
B--Yea. How's the children?
P--Ah, they're all right. TOM just came back from taking MARGARET down
to see the fireworks.
B--Oh, I forgot this was the Fourth of July.
P--Yea.
B--I don't know yet whether I am shipping off Friday or Wednesday.
P--Friday or Wednesday of the following week?
B--No, there is a possibility I may go Friday. I won't know until
tomorrow afternoon.
P--Well, you must feel kind of rotten BEN, huh? Did you have anything
to drink tonight?
B--A little.
P--I wonder how that affects those shots?
B--I don't know. I was told it has no effect on them.
P--Really! That is interesting to know - well
B--Did you have any affect from the champagne?
P--At Patterson's? Oh no, did you? That was a fairly conservative party
I would say. I mean we had enough, but not too much like we did the
night before - I mean two nights before.
B--Yea.
P--That was a nice party.
B--Yes, very nice.
P--JIM BARNES (JAMES BARNES, Administrative Assistant to the President) was
B--Oh, I didn't notice.
certainly a little stinko. Did you see him? He was weaving.
P--He came upstairs just as I went upstairs--you know and there he was
out in the hall with his drink. (Laughs) We had quite a conversation
up there.
B--I don't suppose he is so happy these days.
P--I wonder what he is going to do?
B--I don't know.
P--I don't suppose he is - maybe that is why he was in the condition he was in.
B--I imagine - that often explains.
P--I think so too. Well, I will get TOM for you BEN, wait just a minute.
