Suggested Speech for Vice President HARRY S. TRUMAN at Buffalo, N. Y., 1945
EMPLOYMENT
I deem it a real privilege to be with you Democratic leaders of
New York State at this dinner held in honor of your distinguished statesman
from Buffalo, formerly your Mayor, your Governor, and our President -- Grover
Cleveland. This gathering is far more than a. political dinner. It really is
another testimonial of our firm faith in American democracy, the same faith
which Grover Cleveland retained during his life-long struggle for democratic
ideals.
You people of Buffalo, situated at the western port of entry to
the Empire State, have already performed a gigantic war task for America
and our fighting Allies. Farms and factories of New York are producing the
all-essential supplies needed for victory. Your brave sons are fighting on
all fronts to bring this victory nearer. Your firm determination that democracy
shall survive is one of the bulwarks of our mighty nation.
Modern po litical campaigne are not unlike military campaigns. For
ultimate success, both reduire careful planning, efficient organization, and
AMERICANS
vigorous leadership.
We Democrats are especially fortunate in having as our
political leader one of the greatest living statesmen in the world -- President
Franklin Delano Roosevelt!
His long string of successes have been so phenomenal that certain
Democrets have assumed that with such a personality, party organization become s
relatively unimportant. Yet, no one man, regardless of his abil ty and energy,
eem adequately withstand a concerted attack by a well-organized opposition We AMERICANS
must unite our powerful forces and support our national leader in order to
achieve essential victory in the difficult tests ahead. Victory goes to the
aggressive champions of the peoples welfare, whenever they are strongly united
for a good cause.
