K: I just wanted to thank you and I am heppy for that very nice
lithograph you sent me. R: Weren't you nice. It is just a little
souvenir of one of our Latin friends. K: It is lovely - very nice.
I am hanging it in my office because I am spending more time there
than I do at home and I am very grafeful to you. R: You know how
we feel about you. You are a dear friend and someone we love and
admire.
I: I want you to know that I feel very much the same about you and I
want you to know that everything I may do here I do because of what
I learned from you.
R: We know that you are doing a tremendous job there with the ground
constantly slipping from under you. K: It was slipping there for awhile
but I think we are bringing it back. R: You do? K: I thing it is going
to be rough. We have got a tough opponent there. R: That's right.
K: And they are not going to get easy. But I think we have a fair chance
now and you know a few months ago it looked as though the whole thing
was going to come unraveled.
R: Henry, did you ever talk to Buckley? K: No because he has been in
Jamaica. R: William White had a very good column. I don't know
whether you saw it, the other day, on my support of Nixon and our
working together.
K: The President told me I could talk to Buckley on your behalf and
he would be behind it too. R: There is one angle I think you ought to
know and that is they have to have more than 50,000 people on the
top line in order to keep their position. They are in third spot; they
don't want to go to fourth and they feel they have to run somebody on
that line. I think we will change the law SO that they can gather their
500 or anyone of the top line which means they can do it in the Senate.
K: Right after the first I am going to have a talk with Bill and urge that
you two get together or maybe that I join you. It might be better if
I were not physically present but I will have a long time with him
He is on your side. You are his candidate for Secretary of State SO
