Telecon The President 1/30/70 7:12 p. m. K: I thought it was very effective, Mr. P. P: Wasn't the first question something. I like Doug C , but he always asked the most stupid WANNERS questions. K: He doesn't mean any harm. P: No, but he's just dumb. This conference required I only got through 18. Well only! The questions werw SO complicated! K: And now that you've stated your fundementals, they are getting into the esoterics of it. The ABM answer is going to give us trouble with the fanatics. I've talked with Laird and Smith and told them to pipe down. d P: It's done. That's all there is to it. K: I said there is to be no further discussion until the 18th when Laird begins to testify. P: It had to be answered this way. The principle is now established. I want everyone to know that when I decide something, it's decided. K: Also the Middle East thing, I liked it very much when you said you weren't pro-Arab and you weren't pro-Israeli, you were pro-peace. P: And on China, I said we are doing it to avoid the possibility we are trying to open communications. K: What you said on Vietnam was very strong. And on the Clifford thing P: That's always going to come up. K: Yes, I noticed that Brinkley was making something of the fact that this means all combat troops will be out by next year. P: Well, it has to be fuzzed up in the announcements. They asked if it's to be used in support of air forces-- - - you and I know they are, but we don't admit it. K: Well, Bob thought it was enormously effective, and the rest I takked to did too.
