Part 2 TELCON Max Frankel Mr. Kissinger 6:50 p. m. , May 22, 1970 F: Hello Henry. K: If I told you it was against the national interest to attack me in your paper, would you take me seriously? F: Of course. There is no one attacking you here but the story clearly points to unrest and dissatisfaction with working conditions. Lynn K: Lynn, why don't you ask Lynn? Why don't you ask them all? F: They all mutter. They all say the same thing - that they are not to be quoted. K: I will tell Lynn to tell you why he is leaving. I don't think it has anything to do with conditions on the staff. F: I think that is clearly not the reason. But the sources say the others are leaving for personal reasons. What about Morris? He won't talk to me. K: If they were absolutely disgruntled with me, they would talk wouldn't they? F: No - not entirely. A man doesn't really want to sound off in the newspapers unless he wants to end up like Allen. K: Anyone who wants to say why they are leaving is alright. I would rather have them say than have you speculate. F: What about Tony Lake? Is he leaving too? K: I suggest you call all of these people themselves and I will remove any restrictions that they think they owe me because otherwise you will just speculate. These are all people with whom I have worked closely and for whom I have the highest regard. So I will not engage in any speculation of why they are leaving or when they are leaving.
