The President
5/22/70 7:34 p. m.
P: Do you recall you spoke to me when Sidey talked with you and
he said Grunwalt was surprised we had more support than he realized?
K: That's right.
P: Did it reflect in the article next week?
K: It was a half-baked article saying does the President know
womething we don't? And some people sayd yes; some said no--the
general conclusion was he probably didn't.
P: But you weren't able to get anything aut of Sidey?
K: No.
P: Isn't that too bad.
K: It is too bad. He's a decent guy. It was much more balanced
khatxtixes than the week before.
P: Newsweek came out better with their poll?
K: Yes. It didn't reflect the mood Sidey reflected to me.
P: It proves they don't care what the people think. Well, let them
sweat a bit. Let them find out what the country is thinking. It seems to
me that the paper coverage of the hard-hat thing in New York is very important.
Would you call Klein and say it's rather important that that be adequately
reported. Bill Middendorf said--he may not be accurate, because he's SO
in favor of us --they gave more time to the left-wing lawyers than to the
hard hats.
K: I'm sure that's right.
P: It may not be, but if Klein would work on Newsweek and Time--
that would help.
K: I'11 call him immediately.
